The Stunning Transformation of Jiknyeo Café: Experiencing the Han River View 'Sky Suite'
Transformation of Jiknyeo Café : Visiting the 'Sky Suite' with an Unprecedented Han River View
A picturesque view of the Han River unfolds like a panorama.
The interior, featuring colors inspired by the ever-changing sunset hues of the Han River, along with the latest Korean trends and unique objects, delights the eyes.
The audio, designed by Achille Castiglioni, a 20th-century design icon, mesmerizes the ears.
Jiknyeo Café on the Hangang Bridge has been reborn as 'Sky Suite Hangang Bridge Seoul' for tourists and will start welcoming guests from July 16.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government and Airbnb have remodeled Jiknyeo Café, which had been closed due to COVID-19, into a trendy accommodation with a bedroom, living room, bathroom, and kitchenette, spanning 144 square meters (about 44 pyeong).
On the hot afternoon of June 20, amidst an unusual heatwave in Seoul, we visited the site ahead of its opening.
The bridge hotel across from the still-closed Gyeonwoo Café, with its simple exterior design, intrigued passersby.
Kuom Partners and atLAB, responsible for the remodeling, opted for a simple design, considering the heavy traffic on Hangang Bridge and the bustling city of Yongsan adjacent to it.
The exterior is covered with aluminum louvers, giving it a simple overall tone that stands out in the complex city environment.
Large panoramic windows towards Nodeul Island and Yeouido allow guests to fully enjoy the charm of the Han River.
Upon entering the building, the glass-finished ceiling and numerous panoramic windows offer captivating views of the Han River.
Despite the heatwave, the interior remained cool thanks to a high-performance ceiling air conditioner.
The interior styling follows the concept of 'Contemporary Korean Design through the Eyes of Foreign Designers.'
Styled by a foreign stylist who has worked with Airbnb, the concept is based on inspirations drawn from visits to various areas in Seoul, including the Han River, Seochon/Bukchon, Seongsu-dong, Gangnam, and Hongdae.
The styling incorporates the latest trends in Seoul, the Han River, Seoul's '2024 Seoul Colors,' and Sky Coral, reflected in a variety of colors and shapes.
To enjoy the panoramic Han River view from morning to evening, 'music' was chosen as the accompanying element.
Visitors can have an intriguing experience with the 'Radiofonografo RR226,' designed in 1965 by world-renowned Italian designer Achille Castiglioni, which has recently gained popularity in Seoul.
Guests can pick an old LP record and enjoy music while taking in the Han River view.
All major furniture, including the bed and sofa, are handmade.
The curved bookshelves mimic the overall architecture, enhancing the interior ambiance.
The living room rug is designed in a trapezoidal shape, matching the living room floor, and is made of Belgian yarn, which minimizes dust.
The side table in the living room was commissioned from Studio Choi Dong Wook, altering the colors of an existing piece, creating dynamic design synergy with the audio.
In the bedroom, a uniquely shaped custom-made bed sits on a carpet inspired by the colorful sunset hues of the Han River.
The quirky pink side table next to the bed was developed in collaboration with an artist.
The bedroom side lamp is a piece showcased by Olivier Mourgue through Diderot in 1967.
The bathroom next to the bedroom is finished in a deep olive color.
Guests can enjoy the Han River view while taking a half-bath in the built-in bathtub.
An Airbnb representative explained, "Although guests can enjoy the view from the bathtub, special film ensures the interior is not visible from outside."
The Seoul Metropolitan Government invested around 700 million won in construction costs, while Airbnb spent 500 million won on interior styling and related events.
An Airbnb representative stated, "After seeing Jiknyeo Café, which was closed due to COVID-19, we proposed the 'Sky Suite Hangang Bridge' to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, which they accepted.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government handled the remodeling work, while Airbnb took charge of the interior styling, donating the props to the city."
The representative added, "We aim to showcase the charms of Seoul and the Han River to the world through the Airbnb platform."
Sky Suite will be available for booking on Airbnb starting July 1, with room rates ranging from 345,000 won to 500,000 won.
Although the official opening is on July 16, the first guest has already been confirmed through a Seoul City event, so the first available booking date is July 17.
