As hot weather continues to prevail, the first tropical night of the year occurred in Seoul on the night of the 21st.
This is the earliest tropical night recorded since the Korea Meteorological Administration began observations in 1973.
On the 22nd, the Korea Meteorological Administration announced that the minimum temperature in Seoul overnight had exceeded the tropical night threshold of 25 degrees Celsius, marking the first tropical night of the year.
This is seven days earlier than last year (June 28) and earlier than the previous record of June 26, 2022.
The Korea Meteorological Administration defines a tropical night as a night when the minimum temperature does not fall below 25 degrees Celsius from 6:01 PM to 9:00 AM the next day.
Today, although the weather will be mostly cloudy across the country, hot weather will continue in the metropolitan area.
In the northeastern part of Seoul and parts of Gyeonggi Province, heatwave advisories will be issued from 10 AM.
Meanwhile, starting today, the southern regions will experience monsoon rains due to a stationary front.
As of 8 AM, heavy rain warnings are in effect for Jeollanam-do and Gyeongsangnam-do, with a preliminary heavy rain advisory issued for Jeju Island.
The Korea Meteorological Administration stated, "Due to the influence of the stationary front, the weather will be mostly cloudy across the country, with strong and heavy rain expected mainly in the southern regions and Jeju Island."
From today until the morning of the 23rd, the coastal and eastern inland areas of Jeollanam-do are expected to receive up to 180 mm of rain, the southern coast of Gyeongsangnam-do up to 150 mm, and the mountainous areas of Jeju Island more than 200 mm.
Other expected rainfall amounts are 50-100 mm in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do, 50-100 mm in Busan and Ulsan, 30-80 mm in Daegu and southern Gyeongsangbuk-do, and 50-150 mm in Jeju Island.
In the metropolitan area, southern Gyeonggi-do is expected to receive 5-20 mm of rain, while Seoul, Incheon, and northern Gyeonggi-do are expected to receive less than 5 mm.
The Korea Meteorological Administration stated, "In the metropolitan area, most of the rain is expected to stop between 3 PM and 6 PM in the late afternoon."
