The "Re_SPECT : Korean Modern Art" special exhibition commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Seoul Olympics is being held at the SOMA Museum of Art (located in the Seoul Olympic Park) from April 6th to August 27th.

This exhibition showcases the development of Korean modern art from the 1920s, when Western painting styles were introduced, to the cultural turning point of the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

It features works by 25 influential artists in Korean art, including Koo Bohnchang, Kwon Jin-kyu, Na Hye-sok, and Lee Jung-seob, and displays over 160 works including paintings, sculptures, and drawings.

The exhibition is divided into five sub-themes.

The first room, "Our Land, Songs of the People," showcases works that express the impact of foreign culture on Korea and how it was expressed through local themes and styles.

Representative works include Lee Jung-seob's "The Yellow Ox" and Park Soo-keun's "Alley in Changsin-dong."

The second room, "Women, Another Art History," and the third room, "Diaspora, Gaps in National History," exhibit works by female artists and those who emigrated abroad (to North Korea), who were once on the fringes of art history.

Representative works include Park Rae-hyun's "Early Morning" and Yi Kwae-deok's "Self-portrait Wearing a Scarf."

The fourth room, "Abstract Art, Challenges and Achievements in Globalization," introduces abstract art, which emerged in opposition to the academic style pursued by the Korean National Art Exhibition.

Representative works include Yoo Young-kuk's "Mountain" and Kim Whanki's "Mountain."

The final room, "Sculpture, Shaping and Carving the Times," displays the process by which sculpture expanded from "Korean-style ideas" to abstraction.

Representative works include Kwon Jin-kyu's "Standing Horse" and Kim Jong-young's "Work 75-11."
