This annual celebration, also known as Workers' Day or 근로자의 날 (Geunroja-ui Nal) in Korean, is a public holiday that is on May 1st.

 

You might have heard this as an international workers' day.

Korean Labor Day is a day to remember the incredible contributions of workers and strive for a more equitable and just society.

 

Labor Day is not an official public holiday in South Korea.

 

 

 

However, according to the Labor Day Act, employers can stipulate that 1 May be made an official holiday within the company's rules of employment.

As Labor Day approaches, numerous businesses organize sports competitions or 체육대회(cheyuk-daeheo) for their employees.

 

Rather than heading to work, employees can be found making their way to the company's training center or nearby playgrounds.

 

Events like soccer matches offer an opportunity for colleagues to bond and enhance their teamwork skills.

 

Following the activities, employees and their families come together for a meal, fostering company loyalty.

 

 

 

In the lead-up to Labor Day, companies often present gifts to their employees.

 

Employees typically receive an email from their employer, inquiring about their preferred gifts.

 

Common choices include umbrella sets or household appliances, ensuring that the company provides gifts that are both practical and desirable.

 

 

 

Furthermore, many businesses shut their doors on Labor Day, allowing employees to spend quality time with their families.

 

As the majority of workers frequently work overtime and miss family dinners, this holiday is an excellent chance for them to unwind and enjoy leisurely drives through the countryside with their loved ones.
