The 'Korean NASA' Space Aviation Administration will open on the 27th.

As the first external agency dedicated to overseeing the entire aerospace industry, it will serve as a control tower for research and development (R&D) functions and related industry promotion, which have been scattered until now.

With a total staff of 293, the Space Aviation Administration will initially start with approximately 110 personnel transferred from other government departments, including the Ministry of Science and ICT, along with research staff.

The remaining personnel will be recruited by the end of the year.

After its establishment, the Space Aviation Administration will oversee policies, R&D, industry promotion, international cooperation, infrastructure development, space hazard preparedness, and space security.

The special law governing the establishment and operation of the administration grants it various exemptions as a model of innovation in government organization.

It also has the authority to reallocate budgets to respond to changes in the domestic and international technological environment and adjust R&D goals and content.

Once organizational stabilization is complete, the Space Aviation Administration is expected to prioritize the selection of major large-scale projects.

Currently, many national policies related to space technology and exploration roadmaps remain undisclosed.

The administration will assist in completing these roadmaps and will develop detailed project implementation plans aligned with policy directions, visions, and mission orientations based on these roadmaps.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Science and ICT will reorganize its R&D sector following the transfer of space policy, projects, and related organizations to the Space Aviation Administration.

The two departments previously responsible for space policy and projects will be transferred to the new administration.

The Public Convergence Research Policy Department, which managed these areas, will be renamed the Public Convergence Research Policy Department.

The two transferred departments will be replaced by the Public Convergence Technology Policy Department, focused on solving social issues through science and technology, and the Future Energy Environment Technology Department, focused on future energy technology.

The opening of the Space Aviation Administration is expected to further accelerate the concentration of aerospace research institutions and companies in the Gyeongnam region.

Currently, 65% of related companies, including major domestic aerospace companies such as Hanwha Aerospace and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), are located in this region.

It leads the nation in production value, number of companies, and number of employees in the aerospace industry, with a well-established aerospace industry ecosystem.

Gyeongnam Province and Sacheon City are planning a space aviation complex city centered on the Space Aviation Administration, modeled after Toulouse, which is home to the French National Space Center (CNES), aiming to establish infrastructure for technology research and talent development.
