The "2024 World Webtoon Festival (WEFE),", the first of its kind dedicated to webtoons, took place in Seongsu-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul, creating an electrifying atmosphere.
The four exhibition halls were bustling with crowds, attracting not only domestic fans but also visitors from Japan, China, Thailand, Europe, and North America who traveled to enjoy this webtoon event.
Major webtoon companies, including Naver Webtoon, Kakao Entertainment, Park Tae-joon Manhwa Company, Redice Studio, KW Books, YLAB, and MStoryHub, all participated in the event.
They showcased exhibits and hands-on programs combining webtoon content with new technologies and operated pop-up stores, demonstrating the cultural strength of Korea.
What stood out the most was the integration of information technology (IT) throughout the event.
Kakao Entertainment drew visitors' attention from the first day with its large-scale "Alive Exhibition."
Alive is a technology that adds graphic effects to webtoons.
Large screens were installed on the walls, and seven vertically arranged mobile screen displays showcased around 300 Alive videos created from Kakao Entertainment's signature webtoons, conveying a sense of depth to the works.
The "Alive Viewer" integrates this technology into mobile webtoon viewing.
As you scroll through each page, characters from the webtoon appear to move in front of you, transforming into a lively piece of content.
There was also a space where visitors could experience the Alive Viewer by wearing headphones and using mobile devices.
Naver Webtoon set up booths introducing "AI Caricature" and "Character Chat."
The AI generates caricatures in the style of artists like Jo Seok and Lee Mal-nyeon.
The prestigious Grand Prize was awarded to Solo Leveling.
This popular webtoon, with an impressive 14.3 billion views, has left a significant mark on the global cultural market, solidifying the webtoon genre's presence worldwide.
Additionally, visitors could be seen filling their suitcases with hundreds of types of merchandise, including figures, plush toys, photo cards, stationery, clothing, and lifestyle goods.
University students and professionals using cutting-edge tablets and webtoon production tools were also noticeable.
Some visitors listened to lectures by webtoon creators or pondered the background details while reading informational panels.
Foreign visitors were especially engaged, reading the webtoon strips and contemplating the stories.
