As Typhoon 'Jongdari' makes its way northward through the West Sea, it is not only bringing concerns about potential rain and wind but also intensifying the ongoing heatwave and tropical nights across the Korean Peninsula.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), while the typhoon is expected to weaken into a tropical depression by early August 21, the impact of its movement is already being felt.
Typhoon 'Jongdari,' the ninth typhoon of the season, is currently tracking along the edge of the North Pacific high-pressure system.
It is expected to approach approximately 50 kilometers south-southeast of Heuksando in Sinan County, South Jeolla Province, around 9 p.m. on August 20. By 10 p.m., it will pass about 60 kilometers from Jindo County and Sinan County by midnight.
The typhoon is forecasted to weaken significantly, transitioning into a tropical depression in the sea around 250 kilometers southwest of Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, by early August 21.
Though the typhoon's strength is relatively weak, with wind speeds likely to fall below 17 m/s, classifying it as a tropical depression, its influence on the weather is still significant.
The KMA has indicated that Jongdari is unlikely to make direct landfall on the Korean Peninsula.
However, as it moves north, the typhoon is expected to funnel warm and humid air from the south into the region.
Typically, typhoons are associated with cooling effects due to the rainfall and cloud cover they bring.
However, in this case, Jongdari is likely to exacerbate the current heatwave instead of alleviating it.
The KMA explained that typhoons arriving during a heatwave tend to intensify the heat by transporting hot and humid air from the tropics into the peninsula.
This effect can lead to an increase in temperature, particularly at night, as the added humidity traps heat.
Residents across Korea, especially in the southern regions and Jeju Island, should prepare for continued extreme heat.
The morning low temperatures in Seoul on August 20 and 21 are forecasted to be around 28°C, a clear indication of ongoing tropical nights—when temperatures remain above 25°C overnight.
The KMA has advised the public to remain cautious, not only of potential strong winds and heavy rain but also of the relentless heatwave and high nighttime temperatures.
While there is a common belief that the heatwave persists because the typhoon hasn't fully entered the region, the KMA clarified that this is a misconception.
Even if the typhoon brings rain, it is unlikely to provide significant relief from the heat, and the increased humidity may cause nighttime temperatures to rise even further.
As Korea braces for Typhoon Jongdari, the public is urged to take necessary precautions against the extreme weather conditions.
The combination of strong winds, potential rainfall, and intensified heat requires heightened awareness and preparedness.
Stay updated on weather alerts and ensure safety measures are in place as the typhoon passes through the region.
