The second topic of the 2023 Seoul Mobility Show after changing its name from a motor show to a mobility show was eco-friendly future mobility represented by electric vehicles and robotics, as expected.
Of course, events centered on domestic brands such as Hyundai Motor, Kia, and KG Mobility (formerly Ssangyong Motor) remained.
However, showed willingness to find his identity as a mobility industry exhibition from acting as a technology venue away from automobile exhibitions.
However, it is regrettable that the organizing committee's intention to expand the event, which doubled its size in the face of daily recovery, has been overshadowed by the absence of a large number of abroad car brands.
Twice the size of the exhibition 'Up'...Collection of Electric Vehicles, Robotics, and UAM
The Seoul Mobility Show began its 11-day exhibition on the 30th, starting with a press briefing, a pre-event.
This year's event more than doubled the total exhibition area to 53,541㎡, with 163 companies and institutions from 12 countries participating, up 60% from two years ago.
The organizing committee promised to create a convergence mobility exhibition that encompasses land, sea, and air even before the event, and as a result, many companies including hardware (urban aviation mobility, robotics) and software (autonomous driving, metaverse, and incubating) participated in this year's event.
First of all, the largest area in the exhibition hall was electric cars.
Kia unveiled the EV9, the first large electric sports utility vehicle (SUV) in Korea, for the first time at the mobility show.
In addition, all exhibition vehicles, including EV9, are composed only of electric vehicles.
KG Mobility, which returned to the Seoul Mobility Show for the first time in four years, unveiled its electric SUV model Torres EVX for the first time in the world.
In the imported car brand, Mercedes-Benz filled seven out of a total of 11 exhibition cars with electric vehicles.
BMW Group, which competes with Mercedes-Benz for the first and second place in Korea, also unveiled the BMW iX5 Hydrogen prototype, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, for the first time in Korea, expressing its willingness to electrify it.
One of the brands that received great attention at this year's event was Elon Musk's electric car brand Tesla.
Tesla, which set up its first booth at the Seoul Mobility Show, displayed Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X, while Model S and Model X were released in Korea after the event.
Alpha Motor, a U.S. electric vehicle startup brand, also introduced pickup trucks Wolf and Wolf Plus using the Seoul Mobility Show as its world debut stage.
Various mobility technologies were gathered, but the most noticeable thing was robotics.
Hyundai Motor demonstrated the electric vehicle automatic charging robot and delivery robot developed by Robotics Lab, and the four-legged walking robot dog "Spot" developed by Boston Dynamics.
The four-legged walking robot "Vision 60," made by Ghost Robotics, also greeted visitors by traveling around the venue.
At the Tesla booth, the humanoid robot "Tesla Bot" was also displayed.
In addition, SKT provided an experience program in which visitors boarded a large robot arm and operated a UAM, and a joint hall for Future Air Mobility, which displays UAM aircraft made by small and medium-sized companies, was also set up.
At the booth of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), self-driving as well as recognizing surrounding objects with lidar sensors were demonstrated, and Hyundai Mobis prepared a program to experience Kevin of self-driving mobility.
"Technology is important, but I need the edge of design."
At this year's event, exhibition cars (showcars), which were created through collaboration with the fashion industry, were also displayed everywhere, attracting visitors' attention.
It is a strategy to compete with design along with technology.
For the first time, Hyundai Motor unveiled the Sonata The Edge, a partially changed eighth-generation model of its flagship mid-sized sedan.
The Sonata The Edge, which was created according to Hyundai Motor's design philosophy, Sensuous Sportiness (Sportiness with Emotional), emphasized aesthetic elements by adding "Edge," which means sophisticated and cool, to the borrowed name.
Benz introduced Asia's first showcar "Project Mondage (G)" designed with Moncler.
Visitors cheered and responded to the off-road vehicle G-Class with Moncler's unique padding jacket style.
The New Mercedes-Maybach S 680 4MATIC Virgil Ablo Edition, inspired by the late Virgil Ablo, the first black chief designer of the LVMH group, also met with a domestic audience at the Seoul Mobility Show.
Porsche Korea, which marks the 75th anniversary of the launch of its sports car this year, revealed its interest in the Korean market by unveiling its concept car "Vision 357," which hommaged the brand's first sports car "Porsche 356."
Many abroad car brands cars were absent, so the exhibition hall was empty
This year's Seoul Mobility Show also showed new faces such as Ineos and Alpha Motors, but many abroad car brands such as Audi, Volkswagen, Volvo, Jeep and Ford were absent, leaving behind a lot of gossip.
In addition, Japanese car brands Toyota, Lexus and Honda did not show up at the event.
As a result, KINTEX Exhibition Hall 1 was empty everywhere.
It was in contrast to before the Corona crisis, when both KINTEX exhibition halls 1 and 2 were used.
Chung Yoon-young, vice chairman of the Imported Automobile Association, said, "The decrease in the number of participating companies in the global mobility show is happening the same," adding, "I think this is a transitional one."
"The number of participating companies will naturally increase as the market environment changes in the future," he said.
