Jeju 4.3 Incident Memorial Day in South Korea is a day to remember the incident in which many civilians lost their lives due to the popular uprising and the violent response of the South Korean military and police that took place on Jeju Island from April 3 to May 17, 1948.

The Jeju 4.3 Incident was caused by the South Korean government's ideological and economic policies that infringed upon the human and sovereignty rights of the indigenous people when establishing a governance system on Jeju Island after Japan's liberation in 1945.

As a result, a popular uprising continued on Jeju Island from 1947 to 1948, and the government's response was ruthless.

On April 3, 1948, a demonstration against the government's actions erupted, and the military and police responded with violent acts such as suppressing the protest and firing weapons.

Protesters were composed of armed civilians and civilian guards, and many civilians were killed in the clashes with the military and police.

Following the incident, there were large-scale arrests, confiscations of property, and other illegal responses, resulting in thousands of victims.

However, the government remained silent about the incident and hindered the rightful compensation and commemoration of the victims and their families.

Due to the efforts of human rights organizations and victim families' movements, a special law for investigating the Jeju 4.3 Incident was enacted in 2006, and since then, large-scale investigations and welfare policies for the victims have been carried out.

There is a space to commemorate the victims of the Jeju 4.3 Incident, called the Jeju 4.3 Peace Park.

The park is located in Susan-ri, Aewol-eup, Jeju City, and was opened in 2007 to commemorate the history of the Jeju 4.3 Incident and its victims.

The Jeju 4.3 Peace Park covers an area of approximately 390,000 square meters, including the disaster areas of Aewol and Gujwa during the Jeju 4.3 Incident.

The park has various commemorative facilities and spaces, including memorials with the names of victims, a peace tower, and a disaster site memorial hall.

In addition, the park has facilities such as a history and culture center, a peace center, and an education center where visitors can learn about the history and facts of the Jeju 4.3 Incident.

The park also has amenities such as rest areas, cafes, and a shopping mall to provide convenience for visitors.

The Jeju 4.3 Peace Park is one of the popular tourist destinations for visitors to Jeju Island, and the Jeju 4.3 Victim Memorial Ceremony is held here every year on April 3rd.
