The globally successful Netflix original series "Squid Game" will return with its second season at the end of this year.

On the 1st, Netflix announced that "Squid Game" Season 2 will be released on December 16, along with a letter from director Hwang Dong-hyuk.

Additionally, Season 3 is in production and will be released next year.

The plot of "Squid Game 2," revealed by director Hwang in his letter, begins with the protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who won the game but decided not to go to the United States, re-entering the Squid Game.

Director Hwang mentioned, “The Front Man, who welcomes Seong Gi-hun, will not be easy to deal with this time either,” and added, “Their intense battle will continue into the grand finale in Season 3, to be released next year.”

He reflected, “On the first day of filming for Season 2, I felt somewhat surreal thinking, ‘Wow, I’m back in the world of Squid Game, filming this again,’” and wrote, “I’m curious to know how it will feel for you to return to the world of Squid Game after three years.”

Season 1 of "Squid Game" created a global phenomenon, recording the highest viewing hours in Netflix history.

Director Hwang won the Emmy Award for Best Directing, and actor Lee Jung-jae received the Emmy Award for Best Actor for their work on the series.

Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo, who appeared in Season 1, will also return for Season 2.

The new cast members are equally impressive, including Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Cho Yu-ri, Lee Jin-wook, Noh Jae-won, Choi Seung-hyun (T.O.P), Park Gyu-young, and Won Ji-an.

Netflix also released a brief teaser for "Squid Game 2."

The teaser shows Seong Gi-hun (played by actor Lee Jung-jae) with shorter black hair, wearing the green tracksuit with the number 456, getting ready to participate in the game again, unlike the ending of Season 1 where he was about to board a flight to the United States.

This raises curiosity about why the sole survivor and winner of Season 1 is returning to the game.
