The city announced on the 9th that it will pilot a funeral service for companion animals of socially vulnerable individuals, making it the first of its kind nationwide.

The pilot operation will run from the 10th to December 19th.

The companion animal funeral service, implemented for the first time this year, aims to alleviate the financial burden of pet funerals and promote proper animal funeral culture.

In cases where socially vulnerable individuals find it difficult to transport their deceased pets to an animal crematorium, they can request the funeral service, and a pet funeral director will visit their home.

The director will handle the deceased pet hygienically, preserve it in cold storage for a certain period, and then transport it to an animal crematorium in Gyeonggi Province for cremation.

The companion animal funeral service (preservation, storage, and transportation) provided by the Seoul Metropolitan Government covers the costs, while individuals are responsible for other expenses such as cremation.

However, six member companies of the Korea Animal Funeral Association will offer a discount of KRW 50,000 to KRW 70,000 per pet for cremation services.

The typical cost for animal funerals ranges from KRW 50,000 to KRW 70,000, while cremation for companion dogs can cost between KRW 200,000 and KRW 550,000, depending on the weight.

The introduction of this service is in response to the fact that over 22 percent of the city's population own pets, as revealed by a 2022 survey conducted by the city authority.

However, the current national law dictates that dead pets should be discarded in trash bags and treated as general waste in local incinerators.

This law fails to address the emotional distress experienced by grieving pet owners.

According to a 2021 survey conducted by the city authority, among pet owners in the city, 47 percent choose to take their pets to crematoriums, while over 13 percent dispose of their deceased animals in trash bags.

Nationwide, the figures stand at 30 percent for crematorium usage and 6 percent for general waste disposal of deceased pets.

Through this new pet welfare service, the city government aims to promote cremation services for pet owners, offering them a more dignified alternative to simply discarding their deceased pets as trash.

Prohibited Methods of Disposing of Deceased Pets

Additionally, it is important to refrain from engaging in illegal practices when it comes to disposing of a deceased pet.

The following actions should be avoided :

1. Leaving, abandoning, or discarding the dead pet in public areas or rivers.

Such actions are highly irresponsible, both as a pet owner and as a member of the community.

If caught by the authorities, you may face severe penalties, including fines of at least 30 million Korean Won or imprisonment for up to 3 years.

2. Burying the pet in public spaces or even in your own backyard, as stated by the Korean law website.

While this may not be illegal in some other countries, it is against the law in South Korea.

Violators may be subject to fines starting from 100,000 Korean Won or higher.

3. Attempting self-cremation or self-incineration.

These practices are strictly prohibited by law.

Not only are they illegal, but they can also pose significant risks to your personal safety, the surrounding environment, and the well-being of others.

It is strongly advised to avoid these actions altogether.

Moreover, if your pet is already registered and licensed, it is mandatory to report its death to the nearest district office within 30 days.

Failure to comply with this requirement may result in fines exceeding 500,000 Korean Won.

Please note that these guidelines emphasize the importance of responsible and legal practices in dealing with deceased pets.
