NewJeans' Performance Draws Largest Crowd at Lollapalooz
Ready to Take the Spotlight
US media reported on the massive turnout for the NewJeans performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago.
The group performed on the Timobile Stage on the opening day of the festival, August 3rd, to enthusiastic acclaim.
Chicago, USA - The renowned outdoor rock festival, Lollapalooza, held in Chicago, has become a new hotspot for experiencing K-pop, with the spotlight on the K-pop group NewJeans.
Prominent US media outlets took note of the K-pop craze at this year's Lollapalooza in Chicago.
On the opening day, August 3rd, the five-member girl group NewJeans and the four-member indie rock band The Rose delivered successful performances, earning high praise.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported, "Fans crowded in front of the Timobile Stage to catch a glimpse of NewJeans, the first K-pop girl group to grace the Lollapalooza stage.
Despite the early 5 PM performance time, the turnout was estimated to be the largest for that time slot."
The Sun-Times also mentioned, "Fans, who refer to themselves as 'Bernies,' were seen holding rabbit-shaped cheering props.
There was a significant reaction when their song 'Attention' was performed, and popular tracks like 'Super Shy' and 'ETA' also gave off a 1990s American R&B vibe."
Continuing, the article stated, "As the unmistakable fan-favorite song 'Attention' began to play, the large audience waved rabbit-shaped cheering props in unison."
It further explained, "NewJeans fans refer to themselves as 'Bernies'."
The Sun-Times elaborated that during NewJeans' performance of the 90s R&B-inspired tracks 'Super Shy' and 'ETA' on the Lollapalooza stage, the choreography reminded spectators of iconic American girl groups from that era.
Prominent outlet Chicago Tribune noted, "The K-pop wave made a significant impact at Lollapalooza 2023," and after underscoring this, it introduced Victor Tran (18), a K-pop fan from Washington state.
The Tribune stated, "Victor Tran, a K-pop enthusiast living in Washington, stood in line since 6:50 AM to secure a front-row spot for the NewJeans performance at 5 PM."
The article described Tran holding a white rabbit-shaped NewJeans cheering prop and explained, "Waving glowstick props in unison during performances is a hallmark of K-pop fans."
Furthermore, the music specialist publication Rolling Stone remarked, "Through their performance at Chicago's Lollapalooza, NewJeans made their debut on the American stage," and added, "The five-member girl group NewJeans, who have caused a sensation among teenagers in the K-pop scene, were well-prepared to take the spotlight."
They continued, stating, "They showcased their vocal prowess with an acapella version of 'Cool With You,' including tracks from their latest album and popular songs from their debut album released last year, delighting their fans."
Regarding The Rose's performance, music critique outlet NME noted, "Korean indie band The Rose celebrated their 6th debut anniversary at Lollapalooza," and mentioned that they gathered K-pop fans at the Bacardi Stage in Chicago's Grant Park from 9 PM to 10 PM, during prime nighttime hours.
NME reported that The Rose encountered sound equipment malfunctions at the beginning and end of their performance, but aside from that, they delivered a captivating show that overwhelmed the audience filling the front of the stage.
A total of 192 teams including Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey, The 1975, and Carol G, among others, have been invited to this year's Lollapalooza.
The festival, held in Chicago's Grant Park, spans across 1.3 square kilometers and features eight stages, running until the 6th of this month.
On the night of the 5th, "Tomorrow X Together" (TXT), often referred to as the 'BTS' younger sibling group,' took the stage as a K-pop 'group' headliner for the first time.
On the final day, the 6th, there are performances scheduled by the male duo DPR Ian and DPR Live.
Lollapalooza in Chicago was once considered a 'K-pop wasteland,' but last year, BTS member J-Hope, as the first solo act and first K-pop headliner, received acclaim for his finale performance.
