The rise of the "zero sugar" trend in the beverage industry has captured the interest of health-conscious younger generations in South Korea, sparking debates about the growing consumption of substitutes in these drinks.
From zero carbonated drinks to coffee mixes and bubble tomatoes (tomango), they promote a healthy sweetness using stevia.
With zero calories and a reduced impact on blood sugar levels, is it safe to consume stevia without worry?
It's a well-known fact that excessive consumption of sugar is not good for the body.
It can lead to weight gain and various cardiovascular diseases.
However, for the sake of health, giving up sweetness is not an easy task.
Hence, people have started looking for alternatives that provide sweetness with much less sugar.
These alternatives, known as sweeteners, offer sweetness without the calories.
Currently, there are a total of 22 approved sweeteners in Korea.
Among them, aspartame, allulose, sucralose, erythritol, acesulfame potassium, and stevia are widely used in the market.
These sugar substitutes are excellent at providing sweetness with far less amount compared to sugar.
For instance, sucralose can be 600 times sweeter than sugar.
Acesulfame potassium and aspartame can also be up to 200 times sweeter than sugar.
Simply put, replacing 600g of sugar with just 1g of sucralose can provide a similar level of sweetness.
While 600g of sugar amounts to 2400kcal, 1g of sucralose is close to 0kcal.
This significant reduction in calories has made the use of sugar substitutes a global trend.
According to Kotra, the global market size of zero-calorie carbonated drinks is expected to increase from $125.3 billion (in 2020) to $243.5 billion (in 2030).
In Korea, there is a continuous release of zero-sugar beverages using sugar substitutes.
Lotte Chilsung Beverage has introduced major best-selling products such as 'Chilsung Cider Zero' and 'Milkyis Zero' in zero-sugar form, including 'Pepsi Zero'.
Moreover, "Boseong Red Tea Zero Ice Tea" is one of the popular beverages in Korea.
This product is a refreshing iced tea made using red tea produced in the Boseong region.
The zero version uses sugar substitutes instead of sugar, providing either no sugar or very low-calorie content.
This makes it a good alternative for health-conscious consumers.
Additionally, you can enjoy the unique flavor of Boseong red tea without having sugar.
The surge in popularity of zero carbonated beverages can be attributed largely to the increased focus on health among consumers, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
With more time spent at home during the pandemic, there has been a notable rise in consumers dedicating efforts towards weight management and personal hygiene, alongside an increased interest in overall health.
Particularly, the growing consumption of zero beverages is also influenced by the desire for flavor without added sugar.
Personally, I also enjoy drinking Boseong Red Tea Zero Ice Tea.
So, next time you're at a convenience store, why not give these sugar-free, flavorful beverages a try?
