If you are planning a trip to South Korea, you might have heard of the several apps to download to use to make your journey much easier.
The biggest one to discuss is probably navigations apps since Google Maps is not able to map South Korea due to safety problems. Therefore, there are two substitute for Google Map, which is Kakao and Naver.
Both KakaoMap and Naver Map were popular mapping applications in South Korea, each offering unique features that may make one more appealing than the other depending on a user's needs.
So, what is Kakao and Naver Map? KakaoMap is known for its user-friendly interface and high-resolution maps.
It offers services like real-time traffic information, 3D views of major landmarks, indoor maps, and more.
It's integrated with KakaoTalk, Korea's most popular messaging app, and other Kakao services, which provides a seamless user experience.
Naver Map is developed by Naver Corporation, the most popular search engine in South Korea.
Similar to KakaoMap, it also provides real-time traffic information, street view, and public transit routes.
Naver Map is well-known for its extensive, detailed maps, and it often provides more in-depth information about locations, including detailed indoor maps for certain buildings.
Both apps have their strengths, and the choice between them often comes down to personal preference or the specific features you're looking for.
If you're a heavy user of Kakao services, you might find KakaoMap more convenient, while if you're looking for detailed information about specific locations, you might prefer Naver Map.
Finding Where to Go
Naver Map is prefered to many Koreans espeically when they have to plan where to go. In Naver Map, you can save the places you want to go by categories.
The picture above is my categories. I saved where I would like to visit if I have any time.
Moreover, there are numerous reviews if you use Naver.
It is more convenient to decide which place to save by looking at those reviews.
However, it is inconvenient for foreign users as the interface is based on English.
Transportation
When it comes to utilizing applications for public transport navigation, both Naver and Kakao present comprehensive details such as bus stop or subway station locations, estimated fares, and walking distances.
However, a crucial distinction between the two surfaces in their language preferences.
This is why I would have to put Naver in a more favorable position. While KakaoMap provides bus and train information in Korean, Naver support English-speaking users.
Naver presents comprehensive English instructions (as shown below with a side-by-side comparison of the same route on KakaoMap to the left and Naver Map on the right).
It includes details like station names, the train's intended direction, the correct train exit (right or left), the names of intermediate stations you'll pass by, and the specific subway station exit to get to your final destination.
However, KakaoMap is useful to check out the time for train or bus becuase it is more accurate then Naver does.
Overall, I suggest to have both Kakao and Naver Map interchangeably when you are in Korea.
However, you will probably use more Naver Map as it has variety options to plan your routes to trip.
Obviously, Naver has everything in English.
Therefore, if you only have room on your phone for one navigation app, I'll recommend Naver Map.
