Transportation expenses often take center stage when planning a journey within a country.
South Korea is one of the countries that has earned a well-deserved reputation for its affordable transportation fares.
However, recent news from the city government hints at an upcoming twist, as they contemplate fare increases for transportation modes like subways and buses, driven by mounting budget deficits.
In this captivating blog post, we'll unravel the enigma of South Korea's cost-effective travel options and delve into the potential implications of these imminent fare adjustments for travelers like you.
Bus & Subway
Last month, the city government announced its intention to address growing budget deficits by potentially increasing subway and city bus fares by 300 won.
This proposed hike would result in regular subway fares rising from the current 1,250 won to 1,550 won, and bus fares increasing from 1,200 won to 1,500 won.
When paying in cash, the subway and bus fares would be raised to 1,650 won and 1,600 won per basic trip, respectively.
According to a city government official, it was initially considered that bus fares would rise by 500 won and subway fares by 700 won to account for the current circumstances.
However, taking into account the economic burden on citizens, the officials have prepared two alternatives : an increase of 300 won or 400 won.
The official acknowledged that surpassing these levels would be realistically challenging.
Taxi
Taxis are no exception to this.
In October 2022, the Seoul Metropolitan Government approved a fare increase for ordinary taxis in Seoul, South Korea.
The initial charge for the first 1.6 kilometers rose by 26.3 percent from 3,800 won to 4,800 won ($3.90).
The metered fare was adjusted to 100 won per every 131 meters, compared to the previous 100 won per 132 meters.
At night, basic fares between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. or between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. increased to 5,800 won, while fares between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. were set at 6,700 won.
Additionally, international taxis would experience fare increases based on distance, and large and premium taxis saw their initial charge rise to 7,000 won for a 3-kilometer ride.

Therefore, if you are planning to travel South Korea for a short time, Then I would recommend you to utilize M travel pass for foreigners from Tmoney.
This pass enables the users to ride the public transportation such as Seoul metropolitan subway, Seoul bus, and Airport Railroad Express up to 20 times a day.
