Around 9:10 p.m. on the 12th, just before "Buddha's Day," 'Newjeansnim' stood in front of Jogyesa Temple.

 

The streets of Jongno were filled with enthusiastic cheers and excitement as comedian Yoon Seong-ho, dressed as a monk, took the stage for a DJ performance, drawing a crowd.

 

Even patrons at cafes nearby waved their hands from the windows, enjoying the lively performance.

 

 

 

Recently, Buddhism has been summarized with the word 'hip' among the MZ generation.

 

Even before the appearance of Newjeansnim, the streets near the venue for the official Buddhist event '2024 Lantern Festival,' which took place over two days, were already heated up.

 

From young couples to elderly couples and online broadcasters, everyone gathered in Seoul's Jongno district for the event that lasted from the morning of the previous day.

 

Young visitors wore T-shirts with Buddhist memes such as 'Birth in Paradise is also paradise' and 'Cease the worry,' taking commemorative photos.

 

Some enjoyed various experiential activities such as meditation and experiencing the moment of death.

 

 

 

Kim, a 21-year-old who recently became a college student, said, "I haven't been to clubs, but I came to the lantern festival.

 

I'm going to have a great time with my friends." Every time fireworks lit up the sky, people cheered enthusiastically, some even joining shoulders with foreigners next to them, showing excitement together.

 

A 20-something woman with a lotus flower headband, Lee, said, "I'm not a Buddhist, but my friend who came with me is, so I followed. Because Buddhism has a long tradition in Korea, there is more familiarity than resistance. I've been here since 3 p.m. to see today's Newjeansnim event."

A vendor selling Buddhist items near Jogyesa Temple said, "Yesterday, sales didn't increase much because of the rain, but today many customers came. It's nice to see people enjoying the lantern festival event on the streets as fellow Buddhists."

 

 

Even foreign tourists visiting Korea showed great interest.

 

From Westerners who were unfamiliar with Buddhism to foreigners who were delighted to experience a Buddhist event they had only seen in their own countries, everyone enthusiastically participated in the event.

 

They could also be seen holding lanterns and lotus flower fans in both hands.

 

A couple from France, Marie, said, "It was fantastic to see people enjoying themselves so much.

 

It's impressive how people enjoy without conflict despite different religions."

 

They also mentioned, "We went into Jogyesa Temple and it was so beautiful that we spent over two hours just looking around."

A monk who participated in the event said, "Ultimately, Buddhism is about controlling the mind and making people happy, and with Newjeansnim and various Buddhist contents, Buddhism seems to have become more popular nowadays."
