What is ARC?
ARC is an abbreviation of ‘Alien Registration Card’ and it is an ID you should register if you are planning to stay in Korea over 90 days.
If you don’t register even though you stay in Korea over 90 days, you will be serving a jail up to one year or have to face up 10 million won in fines, and plus, you will be evicted from South Korea.
Therefore, you have to register ARC within 90 days of arrival.
You are also allowed to go to hospitals only when you have ARC.
ARC basically controls everything you can do here, so make sure you don’t forget to register ARC right after you arrived in Korea.
Required documents
Usually students from international countries get two kinds of VISA: D-2 or D-4.
Whichever you got, the required documents are all the same, and the four documents mentioned above are what you need to register ARC.
To get the application form, you need to visit the website of the place where it handles out ARC and you can download the application form here below:
Where to register ARC
You originally have to go to ‘Immigration Office(출입국관리사무소/출장소)’ and register ARC.
However, there are some universities that help you register ARC, so ask your university’s OIA first if you can some help about it.
After you asked your university, you can decide to go to Immigration Office or not.
Plus, don’t forget to bring 30,000won in cash! You also need to pay for application fee and it costs 30,000won.
Immigration Offices are spread throughout Seoul (or other cities), so you can just type ‘출입국관리사무소’ or ‘출장소’ on Kakaomap, Navermap or Googlemap and go to the closest one from where you are.
It usually takes 2~3 days to finish registering and give you the actual ID card.
