Mapo Circular Train Bus
Launched to Boost Local Tourism and Businesses
Seoul's Mapo District has introduced an exciting new transportation initiative aimed at revitalizing local businesses and enhancing tourism.
The 'Mapo Circular Train Bus,' a key pledge of the 8th civil election term, officially launched on January 25 with an unveiling ceremony and trial run at Red Road R2.
This innovative tourist bus service connects Mapo’s major tourist attractions and 11 commercial districts, offering visitors a convenient way to explore hidden gems and unique eateries within the district.
The bus, designed to resemble a steam locomotive, features an exhaust stack that emits steam and a whistle that mimics the sound of a classic train.
Despite its vintage aesthetics, the vehicle is an eco-friendly electric bus, incorporating Mapo’s Red Road mascots, 'Kkaebi' and 'Kkaesuni,' into its design.
A Tourist-Friendly and Eco-Friendly Transport
The Mapo Circular Train Bus functions as a hop-on, hop-off tour bus. With a day pass priced at 5,500 KRW per adult, passengers can enjoy unlimited rides throughout the day, making it an affordable and practical way to explore the district.
The bus route consists of 17 stops, including Red Road, Mangwon Market, Sky Road, and Dohwa Galmaegi Alley.
These destinations showcase the diverse cultural and culinary landscape of Mapo, offering everything from traditional markets to scenic walking paths and bustling nightlife areas.
Mapo District Mayor Park Kang-soo emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “The Mapo Circular Train Bus is not just a mode of transportation; it’s a project designed to connect 11 major business districts, bringing renewed vitality to local commerce. We hope that every route the bus takes will turn into a popular attraction.”
Grand Opening Ceremony and Special Performances
The launch event was a lively affair attended by Mayor Park, local residents, and key stakeholders in the tourism and hospitality industries.
The ceremony featured speeches, promotional video screenings, and a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing between the district office and various local businesses to foster tourism cooperation.
A highlight of the event was a special performance by popular singer Jeong Dong-won, adding excitement and entertainment to the occasion.
After the formal proceedings, attendees, including foreign tourists and media representatives, participated in a trial ride along key sections of the route, such as Red Road, Kkirikkiri Road, and Sky Road.
A Unique Experience for Visitors
Mayor Park shared his vision for the project, noting, “Many people associate Mapo primarily with Red Road and Mangwon Market, but there are so many more hidden gems. This bus provides a perfect opportunity for visitors to discover the lesser-known but equally charming parts of the district.”
He further highlighted the project’s role in boosting tourism by providing easy access to diverse attractions and culinary hotspots.
Passengers on the inaugural ride were treated to special on-board performances, including busking acts and cotton candy demonstrations, making the journey as enjoyable as the destinations themselves.
With these immersive and engaging elements, the Mapo Circular Train Bus is expected to become a must-try experience for both domestic and international tourists.
