Do you know about Korean traditional house 한옥(Hanok)?
Hanok is Korea's representative traditional house.
However, there are still many hanoks left in Seoul.
Let's learn about three hanok villages in Seoul where you can feel the old atmosphere!

1. 북촌한옥마을 Bukchon Hanok Village

It is a hanok preservation district located at the foot of Bukaksan Mountain between Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and Geumwon (Biwon), and is also called Bukchon, meaning the upper neighborhood of Cheonggyecheon Stream and Jongno.

Bukchon is a high-end house where high-ranking masterpieces, royalty, and aristocrats have gathered and lived, and hanoks are all tile-roofed houses of the Joseon Dynasty.

Originally, there were only a few houses with towering gates and about 30 hanoks in this area, but many hanoks were built from the end of Japanese colonial era, and in 1992, the Gahoe-dong Hanok Preservation District was lifted, and in 1994, many general buildings were built.

There are a total of 2,297 buildings, of which 1,408 are hanok and the rest are general buildings.

On Bukchon Street, Bukchon Yangban Life Culture Exhibition Hall and Bukchon Hanok Village Symbols are installed, and the Gahoe-dong Traditional Village Festival is held where visitors can see the lives of their old ancestors.

Nearby are tourist attractions such as Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, Deoksugung Palace, Geumwon Samcheong Park, and the National Museum of Korea.

Eunpyeong Hanok Village has a natural environment that is difficult to encounter in dense areas of other cities.

It is located at the foot of Bukhansan Mountain, one of Korea's top 100 famous mountains, so not only is the residential environment pleasant, but it is also attractive that it allows visitors to view the mountains with different scenery from season to season.

Jingwan Neighborhood Park faces to the northwest of the village, and it is easy to use the 9th section of Bukhansan Dulle-gil, so you can take a walk or light tracking.

Various cultural and tourism resources are located in the Hanok Village, including Eunpyeong History Hanok Museum, Jingwansa Temple, Samcheonsa Temple, Samcheonsa Temple with standing cultural assets of Maae Yeorae, Traditional Hanok Promotion Hall, and Important Folk Cultural Heritage Geum Cathedral.

Seonjeong-dong is located in Jongno-gu, bordering Waryong-dong to the east, Gyeongun-dong to the west, Donui-dong to the south, and Unni-dong to the north, and 118 hanok houses built before the 1930s are concentrated.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government designated the area as a dense hanok area in 2018 and is providing project support for the preservation and promotion of hanok.

Ikseon-dong was not easily accessible to people until just a few years ago, but it was designated as a maintenance area in 2004 and redevelopment was promoted, but it was canceled when the redevelopment association establishment committee was dissolved in 2014.

Since then, various stores such as cafes and vintage shops that have renovated hanok have been built and commercial districts have been activated, making it a popular attraction for many people.

There are some relatively large hanoks of 50 pyeong or less in Ikseon-dong Hanok Village, but most of them have a relatively small and compact atmosphere compared to Bukchon because hanoks of 30 pyeong or less are concentrated.

In addition, there are traces of Pimat-gil (Donhwamun-ro 11-ga-gil) and alleys (Donhwamun-ro 11-na-gil) that have continued since the Goryeo Dynasty, showing the long history of Ikseon-dong along with Hanok Village.
