The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism announced on the 8th that it will hold the first "2024 World Webtoon Festival" from the 26th to the 29th of this month in Seongsu-dong, Seoul, in collaboration with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Korea Creative Content Agency, and Seoul Business Agency.

This festival and awards ceremony, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism for the first time this year, is aimed at global webtoon fans, as webtoon intellectual property (IP) has recently gained worldwide popularity and expanded into dramas, films, and games.

 

Last October, Yoo In-chon, the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, expressed his commitment to hosting a major festival befitting Korea’s status as the birthplace of webtoons during industry meetings and related events.

This festival is designed to move away from the traditional format of being held solely in convention halls.

 

Instead, pop-up stores by webtoon companies will be set up along the streets, allowing visitors to purchase and experience related products in a more interactive manner.

 

The event will take place in Seongsu-dong, a popular area for the MZ generation (Millennials and Gen Z), with one main hub (S-Factory Building D) and three specialized company venues located nearby.

 

These pop-up stores will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

 

 

 

 

On the first and third floors of the main hub, webtoon production company pop-up stores and special exhibitions will be held.

 

At the specialized company venues, each production company will set up independent spaces where immersive content based on webtoon universes will be offered.

 

 

 

 

In addition to the company-run spaces, visitors can enjoy interactive experiences such as AI caricatures, augmented reality (AR) photo cards, photo opportunities linked to webtoon intellectual property (IP) called "Photoism," webtoon artist talk concerts, and live drawing shows.

The main award recipients include Garbage Time, Solo Leveling, For Your Understanding, The Great, The Boxer, Wife Killer, The Remarried Empress, Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, Hellbound, and No Home.

 

Special awards were given to Unemployed Baek Su, Tomahawk Angel, and Tastes of Horror.

 

 

 

The grand prize winner and the jury chairman's award will be announced and presented during the awards ceremony.

 

 

 

Yoon Yang-soo, Director of the Content Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, stated, "We aim to make this festival and awards ceremony, launched for the first time this year, a global event where webtoon fans and professionals can actively participate.
