K-Pass, a transportation card, offers a refund of a portion of your spending the following month if you consistently utilize public transportation, such as city buses and subways, more than 15 times monthly.
Refund rates vary: 20% for the general population, 30% for youths, and 53% for individuals with low income.
The introduction of the "K-Pass," enabling partial refunds for public transportation expenses, will be accelerated, beginning in early May.
Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport revealed its decision to move forward the launch of the K-Pass program.
Initially planned for implementation in July, the program's start date has been brought forward by two months to alleviate the financial strain of public transportation costs.
For instance, if your average monthly expenditure on public transportation is 70,000 won, you could potentially save 14,000 won for the general public, 21,000 won for youths, and 37,000 won for those in the low-income bracket.
Furthermore, if credit card companies offer additional discounts, the refund amount may increase.
The current 'affordable transportation card' operates on a mileage-based payment system, requiring travelers to log their departure and arrival each time.
Conversely, the K-Pass refunds expenses directly, eliminating the need for distance tracking.
hrough 10 participating card companies, individuals can obtain a K-Pass exclusive card and register for membership via the official app or the Nuri website.
Existing users of the budget transportation card can transition to K-Pass benefits without obtaining an additional card.
The membership transition process is available until June 30th.
As of midnight on the day before the launch of K-Pass, over 250,000 new members have obtained K-Pass cards, while more than 820,000 members have completed the transition from the budget transportation card to K-Pass.
The refund method varies depending on the type of card issued.
For debit cards, the accrued amount is refunded to the linked account.
For credit cards, the accrued amount is automatically deducted from the next month's payment.
Prepaid rechargeable cards can have the accrued amount recharged through the respective card issuer's app.
Accrued amounts can be viewed through the K-Pass app and the Nuri website.
Depending on card issuer and data processing conditions, accrued amounts may be displayed 3 days to 2 weeks after the date of use.
To sign up for K-Pass membership, individuals must be registered residents of participating local governments at the time of registration.
Foreign residents with issued foreigner registration cards are also eligible.
