Success in Shooting and Archery

South Korea has a history of outstanding performances in shooting.

Before this Olympics, Jin Jong-oh was one of the athletes with the most Olympic gold medals in the country.

With Jin stepping down, South Korea's shooting team achieved its best results ever, securing 3 golds and 3 silvers.

The first medal of the Olympics came from shooting.

On the opening day, July 27, Kim Ji-hyun and Park Ha-jun won a silver in the mixed team 10m air rifle, marking a strong start for the delegation.

The following day brought more medals, with Oh Ye-jin and Kim Ye-ji both securing gold and silver in the women's 10m air pistol event.

Kim Ye-ji, despite finishing second, garnered international attention with her calm demeanor and precise stance, becoming a global star.

Her social media following skyrocketed from under 1,000 to over 100,000.

The shooting team continued to collect medals, with Ban Hyo-jin (women’s 10m air rifle gold), Yang Ji-in (women’s 25m pistol gold), and Cho Young-jae (men’s 25m rapid fire pistol silver) all contributing to the medal count.

The team's overall success points to a promising future.

Unlike past performances, where a single star athlete carried the team, this year saw a more balanced distribution of medals among the athletes.

With most of the medalists being born in the 2000s, except for Kim Ye-ji (1992) and Cho Young-jae (1999), the future looks bright.

Archery, another "cash cow" for South Korea, also achieved its best results ever at this Olympics.

South Korea won gold in all five archery events.

The first to strike gold were Lim Si-hyun, Nam Soo-hyun, and Jeon Hoon-young in the women’s team event, securing South Korea's 10th consecutive Olympic victory in this category.

Despite concerns over their lack of experience in major competitions, they delivered outstanding performances.

The men’s team, featuring Kim Woo-jin, Kim Je-deok, and Lee Woo-seok, also won gold, followed by Kim Woo-jin and Lim Si-hyun in the mixed team event.

Both athletes went on to win individual golds, making them triple gold medalists at the Olympics.

Kim Woo-jin earned his fifth gold medal, surpassing Jin Jong-oh, Kim Soo-nyung (archery), and Jeon Yi-kyung (short track speed skating) to become South Korea’s most decorated Olympian.

While Kim was an established archer with a proven track record, Lim Si-hyun emerged as a new star, winning three gold medals in her Olympic debut at the age of 21.

Thanks to the strong performances in shooting and archery, the South Korean delegation exceeded their medal targets early on.

The initial goal of five gold medals was met just three days into the competition, with four of the first five golds coming from shooting and archery.

Fencing also contributed two gold medals and one silver, leading to jokes among fans that South Korea excels in sports involving guns, bows, and swords.

As of the morning of August 10, South Korea has won 13 gold medals, tying the record for most golds in a single Olympics, previously set at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics.

The Revival of Combat Sports

This Olympics also marked a comeback for South Korea in combat sports.

Judo has always been a significant sport for South Korea’s Olympic aspirations, though it has seen declining results over recent years.

In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, South Korea only managed one silver and two bronze medals.

This time, South Korea’s judo team won five medals (two silver and three bronze).

Korean-Japanese athlete Huh Mi-mi won silver in the women’s -57kg category, with Lee Jun-hwan (men’s -81kg bronze), Kim Ha-yoon (women’s +78kg bronze), and Kim Min-jong (men’s +100kg silver) also earning medals.

Kim Ha-yoon and Kim Min-jong’s success in the heaviest weight categories, where South Korea has traditionally struggled, was particularly satisfying.

The highlight of the judo event was the team competition.

Despite being eliminated in the quarterfinals, the team fought through the repechage rounds to reach the bronze medal match.

Even with gaps in some weight categories, the athletes secured a medal by defeating opponents from higher weight classes.

The only medal in boxing came from Im Ae-ji, who fought her way through the round of 16 and quarterfinals to eventually win a bronze medal.

This was South Korea’s first Olympic boxing medal in 12 years and the first-ever by a female boxer, marking a significant moment in history.

The latter half of the Olympics also saw continued success in taekwondo.

Park Tae-jun won gold in the men’s -58kg category, bringing home South Korea’s first men’s taekwondo gold in 16 years, followed by Kim Yu-jin winning gold in the women’s -57kg category.

A Bitter Aftertaste

While the Olympics brought many successes, it wasn’t without controversy.

During the celebration of South Korea’s first gold medal in the women’s singles badminton in 28 years, winner Ahn Se-young made pointed remarks.

She expressed disappointment in the national team’s handling of her injury and criticized their management.

Her comments sparked widespread criticism of the sports organizations from various quarters.

Although Ahn received significant support, some were concerned about the timing of her statements, given that the Olympics were still ongoing.

Ahn later issued an apology on social media.
