Take on the Korean Reading Challenge!

If you are a beginner of a certain language, the most effective method is 'reading a lot.'

I also remember reading a lot of English books when I first studied English.

Starting with books translated into Korean, even if I didn't understand the book well at first, I could experience recognizing expressions that I didn't know when I read it in Korean later.

So, here is my tip!

If you've been living in Korea for a long time and want to improve your Korean further, I've brought recommendations for good books to read!

1. 엄마를 부탁해 Please Look After Mom

'Please Look After Mom' is my first recommendation.

This poignant and deeply touching novel, written by Kyung-Sook Shin, delves into the themes of family, sacrifice, and the often unnoticed contributions of mothers.

Through its beautifully woven narrative, the book offers readers a window into Korean culture and society, allowing them to explore the complexities of familial relationships and the roles of women.

The emotional journey of the characters and the exploration of their inner thoughts and struggles make this novel a compelling choice for the challenge.

Moreover, the language used in the book provides an excellent opportunity for language learners to enhance their Korean reading skills and vocabulary.

By engaging with 'Please Look After Mom,' participants in the reading challenge can not only enjoy a captivating story but also deepen their understanding of Korean literature and culture.

There is an English version of the book as well so that you can compare while you are reading in Korean!

2. 채식주의자The Vegetarian

I also recommend 'The Vegetarian' to put in your selection for the Korean Reading Challenge.

This thought-provoking novel, authored by Han Kang, is a mesmerizing exploration of identity, societal pressures, and personal transformation.

The story's unique narrative structure, coupled with its vivid and evocative language, makes it an engaging choice for readers seeking to immerse themselves in Korean literature.

The book not only offers insights into the cultural and psychological landscape of South Korea but also presents universal themes that resonate across borders.

By delving into the inner world of the protagonist's journey toward vegetarianism and the subsequent ripple effects on her life and relationships, readers will gain a deeper appreciation for the complexities of human nature.

'The Vegetarian' not only challenges readers to consider the intricacies of personal choices but also provides an opportunity to enhance their Korean language skills through exposure to diverse vocabulary and sentence structures.

'Kim Ji-Young Born 1982, authored by Cho Nam-Joo, this novel offers a profound exploration of gender roles, societal expectations, and the experiences of women in modern Korean society.

By following the life of the titular character, readers are presented with a mirror to the challenges and aspirations faced by countless women.

The book's narrative simplicity and emotional depth make it an accessible yet impactful read, encouraging readers to reflect on the broader cultural and social contexts that shape individual lives.

Through 'Kim Ji-Young, Born 1982,' participants in the challenge can not only develop their language skills but also gain valuable insights into the nuanced dynamics of Korean society, making it an essential addition to their reading list.
