"I need to use the restroom urgently" ...
Starting today, if you reboard the subway within 10 minutes, it's free.
Starting from today (1st), when you get off the Seoul subway and reboard within 10 minutes, you won't have to pay an additional fee.
The 'Subway Reboarding within 10 Minutes of Exit' system, which was selected as the No. 1 excellent case of creative administration by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, will be implemented from this day onwards.
Currently, if you accidentally pass the station where you intended to get off or if you go outside the fare gate to use the restroom and then return, you had to pay the base fare again.
Even if you tagged your transportation card to exit briefly, you still had to pay the fare, leading to continued complaints and requests for refunds or improvements to the system.
According to the city's estimates, the number of users who paid an additional fee when reboarding the train within 10 minutes amounted to 40,000 people per day and a staggering 15 million people annually in the metropolitan area.
To address this issue, the city initiated discussions with policy agencies such as Gyeonggi Province, Incheon, and Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL), as well as 13 railway organizations in the metropolitan area, starting from March of this year until recently. As a result, they decided to introduce this system.
The sections where the 10-minute reboarding system applies within lines 1 to 9 are: Seoul Station to Cheongnyangni Station on Line 1, Jichuk Station to Ogeum Station on Line 3, Jinjeop Station to Namtaeryeong Station on Line 4, Eungam Station to Bonghwasan Station on Line 6, Jangam Station to Onsu Station on Line 7, and the entire sections of Lines 2, 5, 8, and 9.
To receive the transfer benefit upon reboarding, you must take the subway again at the same station (same line) where you got off.
When passing through the fare gate, it will display '0 won,' and from the moment the transfer is applied, you must pay the additional fare based on the distance traveled as usual.
This transfer benefit can only be used once during subway journeys, and it will also deduct one transfer count.
It only applies to prepaid and postpaid transportation cards, and it is not applicable to single-use tickets or monthly passes.
The city plans to continue interagency discussions to expand the system to other routes after a year of trial operation.
