Pilates, which started gaining popularity in the early 20th century, continues to be widely embraced even after over 100 years since its inception.

 

In Korea, where Pilates has a relatively short history of just 10-20 years, the trend is no different.

 

In 2011, there were only two Pilates studios, but by November 2021, the number had grown to 838, a more than 400-fold increase.

 

People attribute Pilates' rise to 'steady seller' status to its comprehensive benefits, such as posture correction, pain relief, and body line improvement.

Originally, Pilates was developed as an exercise for rehabilitation purposes.

 

It was created by a German named Joseph Pilates during World War I to help rehabilitate the limbs of male prisoners in internment camps.

 

The reason why Pilates can have such remarkable effects is explained by its focus on 'body alignment.'

 

Pilates corrects posture by repeatedly performing and maintaining movements that align the body's center and balance the front, back, left, and right.

Correction occurs by strengthening the muscles needed to achieve a balanced posture.

 

However, it is important not to expect significant weight loss solely from Pilates.

 

Although calorie expenditure varies depending on exercise intensity, Pilates movements focus more on muscle strengthening rather than aerobic activity, making it a relatively low-calorie-burning exercise.

 

So why doesn’t muscle size increase significantly with Pilates, unlike other strength training exercises?

 

The answer lies in its emphasis on breathing.

 

This is also the reason why Pilates helps to streamline the body line.

 

For muscles to grow, they need to be in an anaerobic environment, but Pilates emphasizes breathing during movements, which ensures an adequate supply of oxygen to the muscles, preventing them from growing too large.

While there are many one-on-one Pilates classes, group classes like 1:2 or 1:6 have also developed actively, allowing participants to attend in small groups.

 

As a result, even beginners often start with a few one-on-one sessions before transitioning to 1:6 group classes.
