Most common types of houses in Korea

 

Have you ever been confused when looking for a house in Korea because the type of house is different from that in your country?

Legal and real estate terminology is very different depending on the circumstances of each country.

 

There are many cases in which names used in Korea are confused with names used abroad.

Therefore, Stay14 have simply summarized the words that mean Korean houses.

단독주택(dandogjutaeg) House

 

 

단독주택(dandogjutaeg) is a house in which only one family lives in one building.

It is divided into single-family and multi-family dwellings.

③ 원룸(One room) | Studio : This is a type of room usually found in a multi-unit house, where many college students and newcomers to society live at an affordable price. It is a one-room residential facility, usually intended for single occupancy. Daily life is possible because it has all the functions of a bathroom, kitchen, living room, and bedroom in one space. Foreign studios fall into this category. On average, it ranks between 13m2 ~ 26m2. A studio with a middle door is a detached one room, which corresponds to a one-bedroom in the West. One room is one of the most popular types of houses in Korea. Therefore, unlike the shape or use of a building, all forms consisting of one room are often referred to as studios.

공동주택(gongdongjutaeg) Apartment House / Multiplex housing

 

 

An apartment house is a large house designed and built so that several households can live separately in one building. This includes apartments and villas.

 

 

 

 

① 아파트 (apateu) | Apartment : An apartment is a house with five or more floors. In Korea, apartments are mainly built as complexes. Mainly, brand apartments are gaining ground, and examples include Reamian, Centreville, and Prugio. Within the apartment complex, there are sports facilities, saunas, and cafes called community facilities. An apartment commonly referred to in Korea is called a flat in England, and it is called a condo, condominium, or apartment in the United States.

② 빌라(billa) | Apartment house, Townhouse

Unlike villa, which means luxurious mansion in foreign countries, villa has a different meaning in Korea. Villa is one of the most common buildings in Korea, and there is no word that has the same meaning in English, so foreigners get confused. Villas include multi-family dwellings and townhouses.

Multi-household housing is a house where the total floor area of one building used as a house is 660m2 or less and the number of floors is 4 or less.

Villas have features of both detached houses and apartments. The concept of an apartment in the United States or Western Europe. Most do not have elevators. Each room has its own ownership and can be registered separately.

③ 쉐어하우스(syeeohauseu) | Share House

Share houses are divided into flat shares, which share common spaces such as bathrooms and kitchens, and room shares, which also share rooms. There are usually share houses in apartment houses, and recently, as house prices have risen, so it is difficult for one person to pay the monthly rent that many share houses are rising.

오피스텔(opiseutel) | Officetel, Studio Apartment

 

An officetel is a type of house where people can live while working. Most of them are “full-options”, which means that basic furniture such as refrigerator, air conditioner, washing machine, kitchen and wardrobe are included. Its characteristic is that the maintenance cost is expensive, but it’s clean and new. As most of officetel is a room, so we usually called “oneroom” as well.

고시원(gosiwon) | Gosiwon

 

Gosiwon is a small room, usually a type of house where students enter to prepare for important exams. They are mostly located near universities, and short rentals are also available. The rooms are small, so the bathroom is shared in some cases, and there is a shared laundry room too. There is no kitchen in the room, and it is kinds of inconvenient to live, but the monthly rent is really cheap.
