March 3 is pork belly day in South Korea.

It is originated because the pronunciation of number 3 sounds the same with "Sam" of "Samgyupsal".

This year it marks the 20th anniversary.

 

A marketing strategy that induces the purchase of related products by assigning meaning to a specific day has been prevalent for a long time.

There are dozens of commercial anniversaries created for this kind of marketing, including Valentine's Day (Feb 14), White Day (Mar 14), and Black Day (Apr 14).

On most days, it is pointed out that it is a shallow commercial affair.

On the other hand, Samgyupsal Day is different in that it started with good intentions to help pig farmers who are in despair due to sluggish consumption of domestic pork.

 

This is the reason for the positive response from consumers. 

In 2003, Paju Yeoncheon Livestook Cooperation designated March 3 as Samgyupsal Day with the suggestion of a member and held various promotions.

This was because the pork sales plummeted in 2000 and 2002 due to the outbreak of FMDV.

The pork inventory reached 10,000 tons so there was an urgent need to boost the consumption.

Since then, the Livestock Cooperation held large-scale events such as pork discounts and free-tasting and that helped march 3 to become national anniversary. 

 

While consumption has increased, it is also true that half of the pork belly sold in the market is imported.

More than 300,000 tons of pork are imported since 2020.

Moreover, as domestic demand soared during the COVID 19 pandemic and high price continued, the price of pork belly has risen enough to be called golden belly, making it difficult to see it as a common people's food anymore. 

 

In any case, the Livestock Cooperative Federation decided to launch the hugest domestic pork consumption campaign in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of Samgyupsal Day.

Various online and offline sales promotions are prepared, such as 50% discount on items at large supermarkets nationwide.
