Korea Staged Against Thailand with 3-0 Victory
Led by interim coach Hwang Sun-hong, the South Korean national football team secured a 3-0 victory against Thailand in the 2026 North Central American World Cup Asia Group C fourth-round away match, held at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok on the 26th.
With this win, Korea solidified their position at the top of Group C with 3 wins and 1 draw (10 points), essentially ensuring their qualification for the final round with two games remaining.
In the home match against Thailand on the 21st, which ended in a lackluster 1-1 draw, coach Hwang made a strategic move by including Lee Kang-in (Paris Saint-Germain) in the starting lineup.
Lee Kang-in had faced controversy following a physical altercation with captain Son Heung-min the day before the Asian Cup quarterfinal against Jordan, where South Korea suffered a 2-0 defeat and elimination.
However, after apologizing to his teammates and fans, and with Hwang Sun-hong temporarily taking the helm for this month's matches, Lee Kang-in was given an opportunity in the squad for the consecutive matches in March.
Although Lee Kang-in's performance in previous matches as a substitute was somewhat lackluster, he showcased his passing skills effectively on this day.
Both of the first two goals originated from Lee Kang-in's playmaking prowess.
In the first half, South Korea maintained 64% ball possession.
Although slightly lower than the previous match, they displayed more efficient football while retaining control.
They led in shots 3-2 and pass completion rate with 88-74 (%).
Despite a decrease in ball possession and fewer shots, the outcome of a 3-0 victory left us extremely satisfied.
South Korea took the lead with Lee Jae-sung's goal, followed by Lee Kang-in's pass and Son Heung-min's goal, securing a 2-0 lead.
Even amidst a relaxed game, they unleashed fierce attacks. Park Jin-sub's crucial goal sealed the victory at 3-0.
While there were undoubtedly moments of disappointment, such as Son Heung-min's missed shot and a missed opportunity for Joo Min-kyu, overall, both the performance and result were satisfying compared to the first leg.
It was crucial for South Korea to change the atmosphere that had stagnated since the important second leg against Thailand.
Following the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Qatar Asian Cup, where only negative news dominated the South Korean football scene, this match is hoped to mark a turning point for the better.
