The Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture’s outdoor classical performing arts festival, "Hangang Nodeulseom Classic," will be held every Saturday and Sunday at 6 p.m. from October 12 to 20.

 

This year marks the third edition of the event, offering a rare opportunity to enjoy full-length ballet and opera performances along the banks of the Han River at Nodeulseom.

 

 

 

This year, the festival will feature the ballet "Sleeping Beauty" on October 12-13 and the opera "Carmen" on October 19-20.

 

The theme for this year is "Opening a New Era." The foundation explained, "Both works reflect the social changes of the late 19th century," adding that they "depict shifts in beliefs, justice, and the image of women, achieving significant artistic milestones during a period of societal transition."

 

 

 

 

"Sleeping Beauty," one of Tchaikovsky’s three great ballets, is known for its elaborate ballet techniques choreographed by Marius Petipa.

 

The performance will feature a grand stage and costumes that recreate the 19th-century Florestan palace, a perfect ensemble dance showcasing the pinnacle of formal beauty, a grand pas de deux (a dance for two) by the lead dancers exuding elegance and precision, and divertissements (entertaining dances inserted into the story) portraying familiar fairy-tale characters.

The stage will be especially impressive thanks to the collaboration with private ballet companies in Korea.

 

Around 70 dancers from the Universal Ballet Company, Wise Ballet Theater, and Seoul Ballet Theater, all members of the Ballet STP Cooperative, will perform together.

 

The role of Princess Aurora will be alternately performed by Universal Ballet Company’s principal dancer Hong Hyang-ki and soloist Lee Yu-rim, while the role of Prince Désiré will be shared by Universal Ballet Company’s principal dancer Lee Dong-tak and Konstantin Novoselov.

Bizet's opera "Carmen" is regarded as a cornerstone of realistic opera.

 

It tells the story of the passionate femme fatale, the gypsy woman Carmen, and the love, betrayal, and tragic fate that surround her.

 

The familiar arias "Habanera" and "Votre toast" (The Toreador Song) have been beloved for a long time.

 

The opera will be directed by Kim Sook-young and conducted by Kim Kwang-hyun.

 

The role of Carmen will be performed by mezzo-soprano Jung Ju-yeon, making her debut in a leading role, while the role of Don José will be played by tenor John Noh.

 

The performance will also feature the Gunpo Prime Philharmonic Orchestra and the Winner Opera Chorus.
