Recently, in the popular Netflix show Chef in Black and White: Culinary Class War, an episode featured contestants scrambling to create gourmet dishes using convenience store ingredients.
Among the standout creations was the "Chestnut Tiramisu," crafted by the Naples Mafia chef, which earned rave reviews from the judges.
What made this episode even more special wasn't just the creative recipes, but also the extensive collaboration between the show's production team and CU, one of Korea’s largest convenience store chains.
CU staff played a crucial role in preparing the set, bringing in 30 employees to replicate a fully-stocked medium-sized convenience store next to the filming location.
They took only four days to create a fully functional store, a task that would normally take weeks.
While CU provided the store, they weren’t sure what items the contestants would use.
It wasn't until the episode aired that they discovered which of their products had been featured.
The 7-month wait for the broadcast paid off big time, with sales of key ingredients used in the Chestnut Tiramisu skyrocketing after the episode aired.
CU's own private brand products, such as Heyroo Chestnuts and Yonsei Milk Marron Cream Bread, saw sales jumps of 49.7% and 29.7%, respectively.
Other brands like Orion’s Digest Biscuits and EDIYA’s Toffee Nut Latte also benefited, with sales increasing by 57.5% and 34.0%.
CU is now considering launching a ready-made version of the Chestnut Tiramisu, taking advantage of the buzz generated by the show.
According to a CU representative, “It's rare to see such a massive sales spike in just one day after a TV appearance, but the impact of Chef in Black and White exceeded expectations."
The Chestnut Tiramisu recipe from the show became an instant hit for its simplicity and the use of affordable convenience store ingredients. Here’s how you can make it at home
Chestnut Purée
The key to this tiramisu is a rich chestnut purée, which gives the dessert its unique flavor. Start by boiling Heyroo Chestnuts in milk, then blend them into a smooth purée. Allow it to cool in the freezer before mixing it with cream cheese for a velvety texture.
Layer with Digest Biscuits and Toffee Nut Latte
Soak Digest Biscuits in Toffee Nut Latte and layer them at the bottom of your serving dish. The nutty flavor of the latte complements the chestnut purée perfectly.
Add Marron Cream
Scoop out the cream from Yonsei Milk Marron Cream Bread and mix it with the chestnut purée. This adds extra richness and depth to the dessert.
Finish with Granola and Chocolate
For texture, top the tiramisu with roasted granola. Grate frozen chocolate on top for a luxurious finish.
With just a few simple steps, you can recreate this high-end dessert at home, using ingredients readily available at your local convenience store.
Even the judges from Chef in Black and White remarked that the Chestnut Tiramisu tasted like it came straight from a five-star hotel!
If you're looking for an easy yet impressive dessert, this recipe is a must-try.
Give it a go and enjoy a taste of gourmet from the comfort of your own kitchen.
