The description of the Korean Peninsula's climate as 'a climate with four distinct seasons' in geography books feels somewhat irrelevant now.
Autumn was already short, but now it seems like it passes by in a fleeting moment, leaving a deeper sense of regret.
Before our seasonal calendar becomes dominated by long summers and long winters, let’s try to make this brief autumn an everlasting memory.
If you're visiting Gyeongju in the fall, here are four must-visit spots for enjoying the autumn foliage.
1. Seomyeon Dori Village
This once quiet rural village has now become one of the top autumn destinations in Gyeongju.
Thanks to the dense planting of trees intended for sapling use, the ginkgo trees here have grown tall and slender, stretching straight upwards like birch trees, without spreading out to the sides.
As a result, stepping into the Dori Village ginkgo forest gives you a foreign, exotic atmosphere, as if you've entered a forest in another country.
When the ginkgo leaves turn golden, the scenery here is simply breathtaking.
Even after the peak season, when all the leaves have fallen and the ground is covered with a bright yellow carpet, the view remains an extraordinary spectacle.
2. Tongiljeon Ginkgo Tree Road
Within the Tongiljeon area, there is a charming pond and the pavilion, Hwarangjeong.
The landscape is beautifully decorated with various trees, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll.
With its many maple trees, the area is especially beautiful in the fall.
Along with Tongiljeon, the ginkgo tree road is another must-see attraction.
From late October to early November, the approximately 2 km road lined with ginkgo trees on both sides turns a stunning golden yellow, creating a perfect path for walking or a scenic drive.
3. Mujangbong Silver Grass Colony
Mujangbong, neighboring Hamwolsan and Unjesan mountains, is famous for its spectacular fields of silver grass.
In the 1970s, this area was a pasture where cattle leisurely grazed.
After the closure of the pasture, silver grass began to grow naturally.
While you need to climb to the summit at 624 meters above sea level to witness the breathtaking view, the effort is more than worth it, offering an experience that delivers beyond satisfaction.
You should plan for about half a day to hike from the visitor center to the silver grass colony at the summit.
On the way up, you’ll find the site of Mujangsa Temple, where King Munmu is said to have buried his weapons after the unification of the Three Kingdoms, and a three-story stone pagoda remains there, worth visiting as well.
4. Ungok Temple
The autumn photo spot here is located outside the temple.
There is a separate pavilion named Yuyeonjeong just outside the temple, with a majestic ginkgo tree standing in front of it.
This massive ginkgo tree is about 400 years old, with numerous branches sprouting from its trunk, adorned with golden yellow leaves swaying in the breeze.
Capturing the ginkgo tree together with Yuyeonjeong pavilion creates a stunning scene.
