Global Celebrations of Hangeul Day : A Showcase of Korean Culture and Language
The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism announced that in honor of the 578th Hangeul Day, a range of cultural events highlighting the significance and beauty of the Korean language will take place across 28 countries.
These events, hosted by 31 Korean Cultural Centers, aim to promote Hangeul and Korean culture through performances, competitions, exhibitions, and more.
Special performances will headline the celebrations at several Korean Cultural Centers worldwide.
In France, the spotlight will be on a creative musical performance titled The Meeting of King Sejong and Guillaume de Machaut.
This piece, composed by Kim Dae-sung, merges the traditions of King Sejong’s reform of Korean court music with the medieval compositions of French composer Guillaume de Machaut, blending Eastern pentatonic and Western polyphonic music for a unique auditory experience.
Meanwhile, in Belgium, the Korean Cultural Center will collaborate with the National Changgeuk Company to present Mr. Rabbit Goes to the Dragon Palace, a shortened version of the classic pansori Sugungga.
The performance, which condenses the original four-hour pansori into 80 minutes, will be introduced to European audiences for the first time.
Language enthusiasts will also have the opportunity to participate in various Hangeul Day events, with Korean language recitation, speaking, and writing contests scheduled in multiple countries.
In Los Angeles, the "2024 Korean Poetry Recitation Contest in America" will invite Korean language learners aged 18 and above to showcase their skills in poetry recitation.
Similarly, Russia’s annual Korean poetry recitation contest will see finalists from across the country demonstrate their proficiency in Korean, promoting the beauty of the language.
In addition, Korean language speaking contests will be held in cities such as New York, Ho Chi Minh City, Madrid, Istanbul, and Cape Town.
Brazil will host a Korean language debate competition, while calligraphy and handwriting events will be held in Tokyo, Shanghai, and several other cities, further immersing participants in Korean culture through writing.
For those interested in Korean literature and the aesthetic elements of Hangeul, various exhibitions and book fairs are planned.
In Indonesia, the "K-Book, Riding the Metaverse" book fair will offer visitors a chance to explore locally published Korean literary works.
Meanwhile, Shanghai’s Korean Cultural Center will collaborate with the National Hangeul Museum to present an exhibition titled Beautiful Hangeul Becomes Art, featuring 37 Hangeul-inspired cultural products that highlight the artistic value of the script.
Additionally, Korean language and culture quiz competitions will be hosted in Germany, Hong Kong, Thailand, Iran, the UAE, and Nigeria.
Celebrations are also scheduled in India, Canada, Mexico, and Argentina, offering local communities a chance to experience various aspects of Hangeul culture.
This global celebration of Hangeul Day not only honors the Korean script but also fosters cultural exchange and engagement through a diverse array of performances, competitions, and exhibitions.
These events underscore Hangeul’s importance as both a linguistic and cultural treasure, connecting people from different parts of the world to Korea’s rich heritage.
