Since its inception in 2011, the Korean Traditional Liquor Grand Festival has become the largest event in Korea promoting and celebrating traditional liquor.
Organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs alongside the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation, the festival is held annually in November, featuring both online and offline programs.
Its mission is to enhance the recognition of traditional Korean liquor’s value while fostering growth in the industry.
The festival offers diverse and interactive experiences such as:
Other activities include face painting, photo zones, miniature crafting, and tasting booths offering food and drink pairings.
Each year, the festival continues to innovate with fresh programs, making it a vibrant celebration of Korea's unique cultural heritage.
Visitors can taste a variety of drinks, including makgeolli, yakju, cheongju, and fruit wines.
Hands-on activities include makgeolli-making workshops, liquor judging, and tasting award-winning selections from the Korean Traditional Liquor Awards.
Unique events like brewery startup consultations, limited-edition liquor auctions, and comedy shows make this festival a blend of tradition and entertainment.
Korea's traditional liquor, or “우리술” (our liquor), is deeply rooted in the country’s cultural and culinary heritage.
These beverages range from Makgeolli (a lightly sparkling rice wine) to Cheongju (refined rice wine) and Takju (cloudy rice wine), as well as fruit wines crafted from local ingredients like plum, persimmon, and raspberry.
Many of these drinks are made through natural fermentation processes, showcasing the artistry and history of Korean brewing.
Each drink reflects regional flavors, using unique ingredients and methods passed down for generations.
For instance, Makgeolli’s nutty sweetness pairs perfectly with traditional Korean dishes, while the elegance of Cheongju elevates ceremonies and celebrations. Additionally, herbal-infused wines like Baekseju are believed to offer health benefits.
The festival celebrates this legacy, offering visitors an immersive exploration of Korea's traditional liquor, from tastings to hands-on brewing workshops. These activities aim to educate and foster appreciation for the diversity and depth of Korean spirits.
The festival concludes on November 17, so don’t miss this chance to explore and savor Korea’s finest traditional liquors!
