Witness the Last Sunset and First Sunrise of 2024 Across South Korea
As 2024 approaches, South Koreans and visitors alike have the perfect opportunity to celebrate the changing of the year by observing the breathtaking sunsets and sunrises that mark this special transition.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, most areas across the country will have favorable weather conditions for viewing both the year’s last sunset on December 31 and the first sunrise of the New Year on January 1.
Weather Forecast for December 31
Despite initial rain or snow in regions such as Jeolla and Jeju on December 30 and 31, skies are expected to clear up by the evening of the 31st.
This means that the majority of South Korea will enjoy an unobstructed view of the sunset.
While snowfall in Gangwon’s inland and mountainous regions is estimated at 1–5 cm, and less than 1 cm in areas like North Chungcheong, North Jeolla, and North Gyeongsang, these conditions are not expected to interfere significantly with visibility.
Rainfall is predicted to remain minimal, with less than 5 mm in Gangwon’s inland and mountainous areas and less than 1 mm in parts of North Jeolla and North Gyeongsang.
Sunrise Predictions for New Year’s Day
On January 1, clouds may occasionally drift across the sky nationwide, but the east coast of Gangwon and Gyeongsang regions is forecasted to be mostly clear—making these areas ideal for witnessing the first sunrise of 2024.
Elsewhere in the country, early risers may still catch glimpses of the sunrise through breaks in the low-lying clouds.

For those planning to welcome 2024 by watching the sunset or sunrise, the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute has provided precise timings for key locations
- Seoul: Sunset at 5:24 PM, sunrise at 7:47 AM
- Gangneung: Sunset at 5:16 PM, sunrise at 7:40 AM
- Daejeon: Sunset at 5:25 PM, sunrise at 7:42 AM
- Gwangju: Sunset at 5:31 PM, sunrise at 7:41 AM
- Daegu: Sunset at 5:22 PM, sunrise at 7:36 AM
- Busan: Sunset at 5:22 PM, sunrise at 7:32 AM
- Jeju: Sunset at 5:36 PM, sunrise at 7:38 AM
Popular Spots to View the First Sunrise
South Korea is home to several iconic locations that draw visitors for their stunning sunrise views.
On the east coast, spots like Jeongdongjin in Gangneung, Ganjeolgot in Ulsan, and Haeundae Beach in Busan are especially popular.
On Jeju Island, Seongsan Ilchulbong, also known as Sunrise Peak, offers an unforgettable experience for those greeting the New Year.
