As the summer peak season for the musical market approaches, large-scale musicals are lining up to attract audiences.
First, this summer sees the premieres of musicals based on Japanese manga, such as *The Rose of Versailles* and *Your Lie in April*, which are drawing attention.
Additionally, popular original Korean musicals like *Hero* and *Frankenstein*, as well as popular licensed musicals like *Chicago* and *Hadestown*, are making a return.
*The Rose of Versailles*, based on the Japanese manga of the same name, has begun an extended run at the Chungmu Art Center Grand Theater in Seoul.
It is the sixth original musical by EMK Musical Company, known for *Mata Hari*, *The Man Who Laughs*, and *Excalibur*.
The successful creative team of director Wang Yongbeom and composer Lee Seongjun have teamed up for this production.
The Korean musical *Hero*, which achieved great success, celebrates its 15th anniversary with a thrilling performance at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts Grand Theater.
*Hero*, which premiered in 2009 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Ahn Jung-geun's assassination of Ito Hirobumi in Harbin, is the second original Korean musical to surpass one million in cumulative audience numbers.
In this production, Jung Sung-hwa, who has consistently portrayed Ahn Jung-geun since the premiere, reprises his role.
Veteran actress Park Jung-ja joins the cast as Ahn Jung-geun’s mother, Jo Maria. The show runs until August 11.
The original musical *Frankenstein*, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, is being performed at Blue Square Shinhan Card Hall.
This adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel tells the story of a man who attempted to become a god and a creature who longed to be human.
Yoo Jun-sang, who was part of the original cast, returns to play Frankenstein after nine years.
The show runs until August 25.
The musical *Chicago*, with a 24-year history, is currently being performed at the D-Cube Link Art Center.
Set in 1920s New York, it tells the story of people living in a world rife with murder, greed, corruption, violence, adultery, and betrayal.
The black comedy is complemented by jazz numbers like "All That Jazz," "Roxie," and "Cell Block Tango."
The cast includes renowned actors such as Choi Jung-won, Jung Sun-ah, Ivy, Tiffany Young, Park Gun-hyung, and Choi Jae-rim. The show runs until September 29.
