The new subway map features a circular layout for Line 2 placed in the middle, adopting the style of octolinear (8-line system) that allows only horizontal, vertical, and 45-degree diagonal lines.

The octolinear style, developed by the British Henry Beck in the 1930s, is known for its cleanliness and making the relationships between stations clear, making it convenient to find destinations.

The existing Seoul subway map has been in use since the 1980s.

As additional lines were added over time, it became challenging to represent the increasing number of routes.

The varied angles of subway lines made it difficult to grasp the approximate locations of stations, and criticisms were raised about the lack of indications for locations such as airports, rivers, and the sea, as well as the absence of line numbers.

The city plans to install a trial version of the new map on the transparent OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) screen doors at Yeouido Station on Subway Lines 5 and 9 at the end of next month.

They will also release guidelines on their website next month to enable the use of the updated subway map in public and private facilities.

The notation system considering foreigners has also been improved.

In the previous subway map, where only the station numbers were indicated, it has been changed to display both the station number and the line together to make it easier to find.

Improvements in design, tested with eye-tracking experiments targeting domestic and foreign individuals in their 20s to 30s, showed a maximum reduction in station-finding time of about 55% and a maximum reduction in transfer station navigation time of about 69%.

Especially, the reduction in navigation time for foreigners is expected to be about 21.5% higher than for locals, making the improved subway map more helpful for visitors exploring Seoul for the first time.

Participants in the experiment stated, 'The circular layout of Line 2 stands out, making it easy to distinguish from other lines, and it seems to be a reference when finding designated stations,' and 'Thanks to the indication of regional boundaries, it was easy to find the way.'

Furthermore, as the existing subway map is applied differently for each station due to the lack of a design suitable for media, two ratios, 1:1 and 16:9, suitable for various digital environments such as online, DID (Digital Information Display), and mobile phones, will be developed to enhance usability.

This transformative changes to Seoul's subway map mark a significant upgrade, introducing innovations like the circular layout and octolinear style.

The redesign not only enhances navigation for locals but also considers the needs of foreigners, offering a user-friendly experience.
