The movie Hachooping with Love, which created a sensation last summer by drawing an unprecedented 1 million viewers for a domestic animation, is returning as a children's musical in the new year.
The musical Hachooping with Love, which opened at Woori Financial Art Hall in Seoul Olympic Park, closely follows the storyline of the film while taking full advantage of the musical format, allowing audiences to experience it live rather than on TV or the big screen.
Targeting the winter vacation season, the production aims to captivate young audiences.
The musical shares the same universe as the Catch! Teenieping series, which has been wildly popular among children for years.
Currently, the franchise is airing its fifth season, Shooting Star Catch! Teenieping.
One of the ‘Legendary Teeniepings’ featured in the season, Auroraping, has been so popular that related toys have sold out nationwide.
During the holiday season, some stores even saw ‘open-run’ situations with parents rushing to buy them at store openings.
Set as a prequel to the five TV series, the musical follows Romi, princess of the Emotion Kingdom, as she meets Hachooping, the most distinguished Teenieping.
The story also features familiar characters from the Catch! Teenieping series, including Romi’s parents—the king and queen of the Emotion Kingdom—as well as Dr. Monju, the cat-like headmaster of the Royal Teenieping School.
In the musical, Romi becomes fascinated by Hachooping after discovering a book about it in the library.
This leads her on an adventurous journey, where she gets caught up in the story of Prince Liam of the cursed Lamienne Kingdom and Trupping, a Teenieping who serves as the villain of the show.
Originally Liam’s closest friend, Trupping mistakenly believes he was abandoned, develops a deep distrust of humans, and ultimately curses the entire kingdom.
As Romi embarks on a journey to find and rescue Hachooping, she forms a heartfelt friendship, which eventually leads to breaking the curse.
The core message of the story is encapsulated in the line: "Even if I get hurt someday, I would still choose to be with you now."
Thanks to the immense popularity of the franchise and last year’s film, the musical is attracting large crowds, even on weekdays.
The audience mainly consists of kindergarteners and their parents, with some children attending as part of preschool or daycare group trips.
Popular OSTs from the movie, such as Fluttering Heart and The Moment I First Saw You, are performed live by the cast, adding to the excitement.
