Mickey Mouse, the beloved Disney character who turned 96 this year, has made a grand entrance at Deoksugung Palace in Seoul—donning a traditional Korean hanbok.
This exciting blend of cultural heritage and global pop culture is part of the special exhibition titled "Mickey in Deoksugung: Art Beyond Boundaries," which runs from September 28 to October 20, 2023, at the Dondeokjeon Hall of Deoksugung Palace.
The exhibition, co-organized by Korea’s Cultural Heritage Administration and Walt Disney Korea, aims to celebrate and promote Korea's national heritage to both domestic and international audiences.
It brings together the magic of Disney and the rich traditions of Korea through art that transcends boundaries.
Mickey in Korea: A Creative Journey
Renowned Korean artist Una Young, better known by her pen name "Heuk-yo-seok," plays a key role in the exhibition.
As a Cultural Heritage Ambassador, she created a six-panel folding screen that captures Mickey and his friends—Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and more—traveling around Korea’s cultural landmarks, including Deoksugung.
Her artwork is inspired by the traditional Sipjangsaengdo, a style of court painting that symbolizes longevity and prosperity.
The screen portrays Mickey and Minnie in traditional Korean wedding attire, with Donald Duck and others also dressed in hanbok.
Other artists involved in the exhibition include Kim Se-dong, who has designed a digital artwork showing Disney characters enjoying themselves in front of the royal palace.
Sculptor Bu Won has reinterpreted Mickey and friends in ceramic form, placing them atop lotus flowers, while modern artist Jang Seung-jin and traditional craft artist Ahn Yoo-jin collaborated on a unique piece that showcases Mickey’s iconic hand.
A standout feature of the exhibition is the large balloon sculpture created by artist Kang Jae-won.
Displayed near Deoksugung’s lotus pond, it features Disney characters walking across the water on birds—a whimsical and surreal sight that captures the imagination.
Throughout Deoksugung, visitors will find photo zones where they can snap pictures with Mickey and other Disney characters, providing a fun and interactive way to experience the exhibition.
Music and Collaboration: A Modern Twist on Disney Classics
Adding to the cultural fusion, K-pop artist Lee Su-hyun from AKMU has filmed a music video at Seokjojeon Hall in Deoksugung.
Her fresh reinterpretation of a classic Disney theme song will be available on the Cultural Heritage Administration’s YouTube channel, offering a musical accompaniment to the visual spectacle.
The exhibit is open daily from 9 AM to 5:30 PM, except on Mondays when Deoksugung is closed.
The outdoor artwork by Kang Jae-won, however, will remain accessible until 9 PM each day, giving visitors more time to appreciate the magical world of Disney in a historic setting.
Mickey and Friends Explore Seoul
The Deoksugung exhibition is part of a larger campaign by Disney Korea called "Mickey and Friends: Seoul Tour."
Launched on September 28, the campaign aims to introduce Mickey and his friends—Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, Donald, Daisy, and the chipmunks Chip and Dale—to various iconic locations across Seoul.
The idea is to make these timeless characters relatable to younger audiences, particularly Generation Z, by showcasing their adventures in music, art, and everyday city life.
Through collaborations with local artists, designers, and musicians, Disney Korea hopes to show that Mickey and his friends are not just characters from the past but continue to be icons that resonate with new generations of fans.
The Legacy of a Mouse
As Walt Disney famously said, “It all started with a mouse.”
Mickey Mouse made his debut in the 1928 animated short Steamboat Willie, whistling while steering a ship’s wheel.
Today, nearly a century later, he remains an enduring symbol of joy, nostalgia, and cultural fusion.
With the "Mickey in Deoksugung" exhibition, Disney’s most iconic character enters a new chapter, blending tradition and modernity in the heart of Seoul.
The exhibition not only serves as a tribute to Mickey’s timeless appeal but also as a celebration of Korea’s cultural treasures, creating a unique space where history and pop culture meet.
Visitors, both young and old, can experience the wonder of Disney in a whole new context—one where the past and present harmonize through the magic of art.
