Planes were grounded, subways and buses increased, and working hours were delayed on Thursday as over 500,000 students in Korea took the annual College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT).
The Seoul Metropolitan Education Office had emphasized the necessity for test-takers to review the guidelines before the exam day.
For instance, examinees were prohibited from bringing electronic devices with them on the day of the exam, a rule reinforced by the 79 reported cases of cheating in Seoul the previous year.
To ensure test-takers arrived at the exam venue on time, the Seoul Metropolitan Government had increased subways and buses on Thursday morning.
An additional 31 subways operated from 6 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, with 16 contingency trains prepared for emergencies.
Additionally, 698 cars were stationed near subway stations and bus stops close to test areas to facilitate transportation for those running late.
To accommodate the English listening test, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport had announced a temporary prohibition on planes taking off and landing between 1:05 p.m. and 1:40 p.m. on Thursday.
Planes arriving during this period were instructed to maintain a minimum altitude of 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) until the test concluded, resulting in the delay or rescheduling of 94 flights originally scheduled for that timeframe.
In anticipation of potential disruptions, the National Police Agency had mobilized approximately 16,000 police personnel during the CSAT to manage noise, control traffic, and uphold safety measures.
In response to the exam, adjustments to working hours were made.
The Seoul city government had delayed the start of its employees' workday by an hour, commencing at 10 a.m. to alleviate morning rush-hour traffic.
Commercial banks in the country had also adjusted their hours, opening and closing an hour later, operating from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday.
In a departure from the past four years, the year's exam had marked the return to a mask-free environment.
Test-takers with Covid-19 or coronavirus symptoms were accommodated in the same test center, although separate arrangements were made for their lunch.
Traditionally held on the third Thursday of every November, the CSAT was widely considered the most pivotal examination for Korean students.
It played a decisive role in university admissions, shaping the trajectory of their academic pursuits for which many had invested their entire youth in preparation.
I, too, have experienced a delayed start to work, beginning at 10 a.m., on the day of the CSAT.
Given the significance of the Korean CSAT as a pivotal national examination held only once a year, it is not uncommon to observe considerate gestures from individuals on the exam day, aimed at supporting the test-takers.
Have you had similar experiences?
If so, I would appreciate it if you could share your insights and observations in the comments.
