He was a renowned Korean naval commander who lived during the Joseon Dynasty in the 16th century.

 

Admiral Yi is widely regarded as one of the greatest military strategists and naval commanders in history.

Admiral Yi is best known for his victories against the Japanese navy during the Imjin War, also known as the Japanese Invasions of Korea.

 

Despite being outnumbered and having limited resources, he successfully defended Korea against the Japanese forces.



One of Admiral Yi's most famous achievements was the Battle of Myeongnyang in 1597. In this battle, his fleet of only 13 ships defeated a Japanese fleet of 133 warships.

 

His strategic brilliance, innovative naval tactics, and unwavering leadership played a crucial role in the victory.

Admiral Yi's most distinctive contribution to naval warfare was the development of the "Geobukseon" or "Turtle Ship."

Also the two swords, known as "jangdo," belonging to Admiral Yi Sun-sin (1545-1598), a designated national treasure, are set to be elevated to the status of "National Treasure."

 


On the 22nd, the Cultural Heritage Administration announced that the jangdo swords of Admiral Yi Sun-sin will be designated as National Treasures.

The first jangdo, now to be designated as a National Treasure, measures 196.8 cm in total length, with a blade length of 137.3 cm and a hilt length of 59.5 cm.

 

It weighs approximately 4.32 kg.

 

 

The first jangdo features a self-composed poem by Admiral Yi Sun-sin, inscribed on the upper part of the blade, which reads,

"Seokja karro haneure maengsehani sanhaga tteolggo" (석 자 칼로 하늘에 맹세하니 산하가 떨고), meaning "With a three-foot sword, I swear upon the heavens, and the mountains and rivers tremble."

The second jangdo measures 197.2 cm in total length, with a blade length of 137.8 cm and a hilt length of 59.4 cm.

 

It weighs around 4.2 kg.

 


The second jangdo has the phrase

"Ilhwi sotang hyeolyeomsanha" (일휘소탕 혈염산하) engraved on the upper part of the blade, which translates to "With a single swing, blood stains the mountains and rivers."

 


Inside the hilt of the swords, the inscription "Gapo sawol iljo tae-gwireon-i-museong-jak" (갑오사월일조태귀련이무생작) can be found, indicating that they were made in April of the year "Gapo" (1594) by the craftsmen Tae-gwireon and Yi Museong.

The Cultural Heritage Administration explains that these inscriptions, matching the historical records of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, make these swords significant artifacts symbolizing his historical legacy.
