JTBC’s new weekend drama Heavenly Ever After has finally kicked off, and it’s everything we hoped for - a story full of laughter, touching moments, and a bit of magic that transcends life itself.
At its core, Heavenly Ever After deals with themes no one has personally experienced but everyone has imagined: death, the afterlife, heaven, and even hell.
It’s the kind of heavy topic that could easily turn dark, but director Kim Seok-yoon and writers Lee Nam-gyu and Kim Soo-jin masterfully wrap it in warmth, wit, and a unique emotional touch.
The true heart of the story is Kim Hye-ja, making a breathtaking return to the screen.
Director Kim even described this project as the “Kim Hye-ja Project”, and it’s easy to see why.
She completely transforms into Lee Hae-sook, a tough-as-nails loan shark in the living world who’s also an adorably loving wife to her husband of 60 years.
After passing on, she becomes a quirky and charming newcomer to heaven.
When she reunites with her husband, who’s now in his 30s, and meets the mysterious Som-i (played by Han Ji-min), her "heavenly life" takes on a new, dynamic turn.
It’s impossible not to be curious about what’s coming next for her.
Son Suk-ku, playing her husband Go Nak-joon, brings a whole new side of himself to the table.
Known for his intense roles in previous dramas, here he fully embraces comedy and romance, creating hilarious and heart-melting chemistry with Kim Hye-ja.
His portrayal of a mischievous, sweet "loving husband" feels so natural, especially the way he treats his elderly wife with boyish affection in heaven.
And when Han Ji-min's Som-i enters their peaceful afterlife at the end of episode 2, everything shifts. Her innocent eyes and sunny smile hide a deeper mystery.
Another standout is Lee Jung-eun, who plays Lee Young-ae.
From the first episode, she captures hearts with her bold style and emotional depth.
Her tearful scenes, showing a bond with Lee Hae-sook stronger than family, leave a lasting impression.
The backstory of their friendship is touching, and the moment she runs out in grief after Hae-sook’s passing hints at even more emotional moments to come.
Heavenly Ever After is off to a magical and moving start.
If you’re looking for a show that makes you laugh, tugs at your heartstrings, and gives you something a little bit fantastical to believe in — this drama is definitely worth adding to your watchlist.
