The world that novelist Han Kang (54) has fiercely constructed has ultimately reached universal humanity.

On October 10th, the Swedish Academy announced Han Kang as the recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature.

The Academy praised Han Kang's literature as "powerful poetic prose that confronts historical trauma and reveals the fragility of human life."

Han Kang is the first Korean to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Moreover, she is the first Asian woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in its 123-year history.

Han Kang's Nobel Prize marks the second time a Korean has won a Nobel Prize, following former President Kim Dae-jung, who was awarded the Peace Prize in 2000, making it the first in 24 years.

Han Kang first stepped into the literary world in 1994 when her short story "The Red Anchor" won the Seoul Shinmun New Year's Literary Contest.

Prior to that, she debuted as a poet in the 1993 winter issue of "Literature and Society."

Even now, Han Kang continues to work in both poetry and fiction, recently publishing two poems, including "Meditation on Pain" in the autumn issue of "Literature and Society" (No. 147).

Born in Gwangju in November 1970 as the daughter of novelist Han Seung-won, she graduated from Yonsei University with a degree in Korean Language and Literature.

Han Kang is also a key figure elevating the status of Korean literature on the global stage, often referred to as a "pioneer of K-literature."

Her landmark work, "The Vegetarian," which portrays a woman who, scarred by childhood trauma, rejects eating meat and gradually approaches death, won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize, setting a new milestone for Korean literature.

Last year, she received France's prestigious Medici Prize for her novel "I Do Not Say Goodbye," a story that examines the tragic Jeju 4·3 Uprising through the perspectives of three women.
