What’s New This Year
For a thousand years, it has continued.
And for another thousand years, it will continue.
The Dano Festival is back.
This year, the theme of the Gangneung Danoje Festival is "Rise, Dano."
It aims to elevate the festival's status to a global event.
This year's festival embraces various changes to keep pace with the times, including space changes, expanded citizen participation, enhanced performance programs, and strengthened safety measures.
Let’s enjoy the festival together by noting what’s new this year.
Space Changes
To improve the efficiency of event operations, the locations of Arimadang and the wrestling arena within the festival grounds have been swapped.
Additionally, to minimize the inconvenience and complexity of the traditional market, the market items have been organized into zones: entertainment booths in Gangnam-dong and snacks and goods in Jungang-dong.
A new resting area has also been established within the market.
Moreover, to encourage small businesses to participate in the festival, a direct trade market has been created, featuring 12 vendors.
For the first time, the Gangneung Coffee Festival, also known as the Coffee Exhibition, will be held within the Gangneung Danoje Festival.
Organized by the Gangneung Coffee Association, about ten coffee booths will be set up within the festival grounds, offering various coffee experiences and products.
Expanded Citizen Participation
For the first time ever, a dress code has been introduced.
The dress code for the 2024 Gangneung Danoje Festival is Hanbok.
Visitors wearing Hanbok who visit the Dano Experience Village will receive free photo printing or a badge, and a 10% discount on food trucks.
Successful completion of the stamp rally will also grant additional gifts.
The Dano Experience Village programs have been expanded to include camellia oil application, balsam dyeing, and making jangmyeongru (traditional Korean bracelets), enhancing the enjoyment of visitors.
Additionally, the "Dano 1000 Tiles Remind Program - Connecting Memories" will be held.
The Dano 1000 Tiles program, which ran from 2006 to 2015, has accumulated 10,000 tiles over 10 years, which are now displayed on the walls of the Gangneung Danoje Festival Training Center and nearby Dano Town.
Visitors who find their painted tile within Dano Town during the festival period will receive a souvenir on a first-come, first-served basis (500 people).
The festival's most popular event, the "Stamp Rally," will take place on the five bridges connecting the Dano festival grounds: Seopdari, Changpodari, Namsan Bridge, Jamsu Bridge, and Wolhwa Bridge.
Completing the stamp rally at these five bridges will reward the first 250 visitors each day with Gangneung Danoje goods, and the first 1000 visitors with a Cheonjoong amulet, believed to ward off evil.
The Dano essay contest, previously held as a competition, will be transformed into an on-site essay contest (June 8 at Dano Park).
The Rhododendron Challenge for students and the Rhododendron Concert, enjoyed at the Dano Festival, will be held at the Dano Festival site for the first time (June 10 at Surimadang).
More Diverse Performance Stages
The festival will feature the "Shintongdaegil Gilnori," the essence of Korean-style street performances, which will enhance village-specific content and increase participating teams from 26 to 34.
As part of the National Theater's regional cultural hub performance project, the National Dance Company's "Festival" will be the closing performance of this year's Dano Festival (June 13 at Surimadang).
Additionally, the festival will debut an immersive performance, "Dano of Memories," which does not strictly separate the stage and audience, creating a free-form performance space.
This performance, organized by Art Company Haerang, will recreate the scenery of the Dano Festival with miniature objects and everyday props, featuring a circus tent, medicine sellers, strength shows, a national product bingo game, and tug-of-war, evoking nostalgic memories of Dano.
The performance, with an admission fee (15,000 won for adults, 10,000 won for teenagers), allows 50 people per show, with tickets available on Interpark Ticket or at the venue.
Enhanced Visitor Convenience and Safety
To address the issue of overcharging, a common concern at local festivals, a reporting center will operate from 10 AM to 9 PM at the festival grounds. To stabilize prices, signature menus with standardized prices have been introduced.
The signature menu for the Gangneung Danoje Festival includes 1000ml of Danoju (Dano rice wine) and two potato pancakes.
The price of soju, a common drink for the general public (Saero, Chum-Churum), has been set at 4,000 won, and the price of two potato pancakes has been set at 12,000 won to reduce the burden on tourists and citizens.
Additionally, restaurant banners will display the representative’s name and phone number, and price lists will be pre-notified within restaurants.
Safety measures will be strengthened by using IoT-based unmanned counters to monitor foot traffic and prepare for safety incidents.
Additional safety personnel will be deployed for regular inspections.
The festival will also promote the use of reusable items at the event, such as multi-use containers and eco-bags instead of plastic bags, to join the eco-friendly festival movement.
Strengthened Pre-Promotion
In anticipation of the 20th anniversary of its UNESCO registration next year, nationwide pre-promotion has been strengthened to expand the festival’s reach across the country.
For the first time, from May 6 to June 6, a "10-second still-cut digital poster of Gangneung Danoje Festival" was displayed on 24 screens in the Seoul Station subway.
Additionally, kiosk banner advertisements were run at all 1,200 Lotteria locations, and posters were displayed at 700 stores in Seoul and Gyeonggi to actively promote the festival.
Earlier, on May 22, the committee held a joint promotion at Cheonggye Plaza in Seoul with the National Dano Festival Federation (Gangneung, Gyeongsan, Beopseongpo, Gwangju, Jeonju) under the theme "Dano, Becoming One," drawing attention.
To boost local enthusiasm for the festival, from May 24 to June 1, the Gangneung Danoje promotional team "Danddara" conducted street promotions at KTX Gangneung Station, Wolhwa Street, Okcheon Intersection, and in front of Gangneung City Hall.
Moreover, street banners were installed throughout the city, an advertising balloon was flown over the Namdaecheon Festival grounds, and a large banner was hung on the wall of the Bank of Korea in Okcheon-dong.
