Have you ever heard the island of Biyangdo?
Biyangdo is the third-largest inhabited island among Jeju’s subsidiary islands, following Udo and Gapado.
This article introduces Biyangdo, a must-visit destination on a Jeju trip.
The island has well-developed soil, allowing subtropical trees like Biyang trees to form dense clusters.
Covering an area of 0.5㎢, it is home to about 200 residents in 60 households. During the summer, it attracts many fishing enthusiasts.
Today, we introduce three recommended activities on Biyangdo.
1. Biyangbong Oreum Trail
Although Biyangdo is a small island, it has a well-maintained coastal trail, making it a popular trekking destination.
The routes are divided into two: the Biyangbong Oreum Trail, which loops around Biyangbong Peak, and the Coastal Circular Trail, which follows the coastline.
Taking the Oreum Trail, you will pass by homes and farmland lined with stone walls that protect against strong sea winds.
After walking through alleyways and gentle slopes, a three-way intersection appears, where the right path leads to Biyangbong.
At the end of the uphill trail, a white lighthouse stands at the peak.
The summit has no large trees, only tall grasses and shrubs, creating a unique landscape reminiscent of a pasture.
2. Geo Trail - Coastal Circular Path
The Coastal Circular Path is more than 1 km longer than the Oreum Trail.
Along this route, you can see volcanic rock formations and unique geological features.
Biyangdo preserves traces of primitive volcanic activity, making it geologically significant.
Since the path is mostly flat, it takes about 40 minutes to walk or 20 minutes by bicycle.
3. Elephant Rock
Along the Circular Path, you can often spot spatter layers and volcanic bombs, remnants of hardened lava.
One of the largest volcanic bombs on Biyangdo measures 4 meters in diameter and weighs 10 tons.
Such large volcanic bomb formations are a rare sight, unique to Biyangdo.
Additionally, there is a massive rock resembling an elephant, often occupied by hundreds of cormorants.
The birds' droppings have turned the black basalt rock white, making it look like a large white elephant standing by the sea.
How to Get to Biyangdo?
To visit Biyangdo, take a ferry from Hallim Port.
Two ferries operate daily, making a total of eight round trips (four departures each way).
The journey from Hallim Port to Biyangdo takes approximately 15 minutes.
However, ferry schedules may vary depending on weather conditions, so it is best to call ahead for confirmation.
