83-Year-Old Woman Breaks Barriers, Accepted to Sookmyung Women's University In South Korea
Can elders graduate from University?
There were so many debates that ages do matter in education.
Especially when we reach the age of 60, it is particularly challenging to learn new things.
That idea has pushed many seasoned individuals to throw in the towel on education.
But let's pause on that thought and give a shout-out to the concept of lifelong learning.
Can elders still educate themselves when they are aged?
Can elders enters college and learn new skills?
Here is a huge inspiration you can feel through this case.
An 84-year-old South Korean woman, named “Kim Jung-Ja 김정자” who started her late-in-life dedication to education, has just achieved a milestone by gaining acceptance into the extension college of Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul.
The university announced on Friday that Kim Jeong-ja is now officially enrolled as a social welfare major in its Future Education Institute, receiving a one-year scholarship to support her educational journey.
The reason why this was possible is because of South Korea’s welfare policy for older adults.
As the population of older adults was increasing, the demand of social participation and education in their old age to follow up with society.
National and local administration have started supporting the voluntary institution of education for older people so it can vitalise intergenerational action.
Kim, expressing her determination, said, "I will keep on learning as much as my health allows. I know I might forget some things due to my age, but I'll give my best in attending the school."
Kim's inspiring story came into the limelight in 2019 when she appeared on the tvN show "You Quiz on the Block," sharing her aspiration for learning.
Born in 1941, she faced obstacles to education because of her family's financial struggles and societal biases against women at the time.
Having recently graduated from Ilsung Women's Middle and High School, a lifelong learning institute in Seoul, Kim successfully took the state-issued college entrance exam last year.
Her dream has always been to attend Sookmyung Women's University as her granddaughter is attending it.
She is aiming to learn more English and learn how to communicate in english.
In a recent appearance on the tvN show, Kim revealed that her scores on the Suneung (college entrance exam) were better than expected.
Nonetheless, Kim's resilience and commitment to lifelong learning continue to inspire people worldwide.
It is one of the greatest inspirations she can show that even though you are old, if you are determined to make it, you can make it.
If you are feeling like giving up on something, just think of Kim Jung-ja.
Everyone can make it if you just simply not give up.
