Lead cast: Nam Joo-hyuk, Lee Joon-hyuk, Yoo Ji-tae, Kim So-jin
After the success of "Moving" and the currently airing "The Worst of Evil," Disney+ is gearing up for a hat-trick with "Vigilante," a gritty, hard-hitting revenge saga featuring Nam Joo-hyuk from "Twenty-Five Twenty-One."
The series is scheduled for release on November 8, and it recently made its debut with three out of eight episodes at the Busan International Film Festival.
Delving into a similar realm of societal unrest, "Vigilante" shares thematic elements with the recent drama "The Killing Vote" but distinguishes itself with a sharper focus and a more captivating plot.
This adaptation of the Naver webtoon of the same name navigates the same morally ambiguous territory seen in many iterations of iconic heroes like Batman or Spider-Man.
"Vigilante" is a Disney+ original series that tells the story of Kim Ji-yong (played by Nam Joo-hyuk), an exemplary police academy student who upholds the law during the day but lives as a vigilante who personally judges criminals evading justice at night.
He finds himself in fierce conflicts with individuals who have different motivations.
Yoo Ji-tae portrays the role of Jo Heon, the police team leader who is in pursuit of the vigilante.
Lee Jun-hyuk plays Jo Kang-ok, a supporter of the vigilante who admires him and assists in his own way.
Kim So-jin takes on the character of Choi Mi-ryeo, a broadcast journalist who first exposes the vigilante to the world.
"Vigilante" is based on a webtoon. Director Choi mentioned, "I came across the webtoon 'Vigilante' when I was preparing the film '시동' ('Start-Up'). It had just started its serialization at that time, around 5 or 6 episodes in.
I found the story interesting."
He added, "After '시동' was completed, I received a request from the production company of this series, asking if I would like to work on 'Vigilante.' I thought, 'This is the story I wanted to tell,' and that's how it all came together."
When asked about the considerations in making "Vigilante," Director Choi said,
"I wanted to create an engaging story that focuses on diverse characters, each with their own beliefs, who sometimes oppose and at other times reconcile with each other.
I wanted to maintain the genre's entertainment value without losing sight of the characters' depth and the interesting narrative."
He also mentioned that he was so happy after finalizing the cast that he had trouble sleeping, indicating his satisfaction with the casting decisions.
