Architecture. It is the art of constructing the building.
Depending on different cultures, countries, and locations, influence the overall architecture.
Like Japan, they most likely have earthquake-resistant structures to secure safety during the earthquake traditionally.
Singapore harmonized urbanized areas with nature by implementing plant life in buildings.
In South Korea, we have Hanok! As you might wonder what is Hanok, In today’s stay14 article, we would like to introduce the Korean traditional Architecture, Hanok!
Hanok:The Korean Traditional Architecture
Just like every other architecture.
Korean architecture reflects its cultural context.
Based on Korean tradition, most of the architecture’s designs consist of natural elements, economical shapes, and simplicity.
The height, width, and structures.
Such as the design of Hanok.
Just like the picture above, Hanok is one of the Korean architecture that represents its integration with nature.
As South Korea was full of mountains around the town, the hanok architects had to be hugely relevant to its nature.
Such as the element of this house, made of wood.
Also how they curved their roof with iron to prevent the rain from remaining on the roof and rotting the woods.
The most outstanding part of Handok is that they have connected indoor and outdoor parts.
This has inspired so many architectures differently.
The picture above shows how architects have modernized Hanok in a modern style.
As you can architects have designed this modern Hanok in a way that empathizes with the connection between indoors and outdoors.
Making the view of the house clean and nature-friendly.
Especially the spatial hierarchy of each room displays the designated purpose and greatly reflects Korean aesthetics.
Ondol:The Ancient Wisdom Of Hanok in Winter
You might think, that if the house is made of wood without anything, it might be really cold in winter, but you are not seeing the whole culture.
Let me introduce the inner system of Hanok.
The traditional Korean heating system, ondol!
It is the heat stones under the floor to radiate warmth, combining conduction and convection.
It influenced seated and barefoot living, along with single-story homes.
Also, Ondol had diverse roles such as cooking, and contributed to hygiene by enabling floor panel use. etc Its use of yellow soil construction highlights its cultural significance in Korean history.
You can glimpse the Korean Ancients’ wisdom in this structure.
Madang:Innovation of Hanok
A recent example of Hanok architects you can find is the 23rd Serpentine Pavilion, designed by Seoul-based architect Cho Min-suk and his firm, Mass Studies, which will revolve around the Korean concept of "Madang" — a versatile courtyard.
This madang itself is derived from the outdoor part of Hanok.
The design itself has not been released yet, but will be unveiled on June 5 at Serpentine South in London, the pavilion, titled "Archipelagic Void," takes the form of a five-pointed star with a central void.
Consisting of five "islands" surrounding an open space, the central area emulates the functionality of a traditional Hanok’s outdoor "Madang".
What does Madang do?
Madang serves the role of giving families or friends communal space serving various purposes, from everyday activities to special events like weddings and funerals.
This form of architecture has been influenced by Korean collectivistic cultures itself and formed another innovation in London!
Hanok itself is like the Korean traditional treasure.
All the wisdom of Korean ancient and beauty is integrated into Korean Architects.
Its unique heating system in winter, curved design of the roof, and interconnectedness of nature and indoors make it extra special.
In modern South Korea, it is hard to see people living traditional Hanok these days but these historical treasures have still remained as the modern innovations in modern architects!
If you are interested in seeing Hanok, we stay14 recommend Bukchon Hanok village.
We will put down the address in this article.
Enjoy your journey in South Korea!
